A Co-Worker had problems with his bank because of the amount of time it was taking the bank to clear a payroll check.

The kicker is that our company has an account with the same bank as my Co-Worker.

Neither myself or my co-worker are familar with the mysterious and mystical ways of banks, but it seemed to both of us that it would be pretty easy to verify that it was a valid check with enough funds behind it. At least in less then a week.

Fortunately this co-worker is now on direct deposit.

I thought all payroll checks had no holding time? Mine never did...

Or at the very least that it would be a short holding time. That is what was so frustrating for this co-worker - even though both he and our company share the same bank, no one at the bank could reasonably explain why it needed to be held for so long before the funds were deposited.

My check should have direct deposited into my account on Thursday. As of yesterday, it still hadn't. I can't call the credit union about it until Monday, when they re-open. Hopefully, it will be there THEN. It would have been a total pain in the ass had I actually wanted to go shopping this weekend (I only have to buy diapers).

Before I had direct deposit, there was no hold on my deposits, so I could use the full (crappy) amount right away.

The amount my register shows and the amount the credit union shows I have, never match up, because I've deducted all the things that haven't yet cleared. So of course if I called, they'd say I had XXX amount, because I still had things floating around. Doesn't matter though, because once I've written a check or done a payment, that money is GONE. Doesn't matter if it takes months for the thing to clear, because I have already deducted the amount.

I think not keeping some sort of personal record (in addition to calling the bank) is just asking for trouble. Of course, this may be because I can't do math in my head and would constantly be screwing up, if I didn't keep a register.

My grandmother doesn't keep a register, she relies on the very helpful ladies at the credit union to help her keep up to date. She's been lucky, because she's only bounced one check in the past 15 years, but still, she never knows exactly how much money she REALLY has.

To the OP, I hope you get it resolved soon.
