  • You need a receipt. Really.

A frequent customer came into the store one day (she once applied for a job; here's a tip, don't dis the display to the person who made it) to get a refund.

No problem. Our store had a fairly liberal refund policy (fabric store & you could get a refund on cut fabric, etc for the full amount that you paid), however, as the clerk told her: no receipt, no refund. We could do an exchange without a receipt, but not a refund. That took some lengthy explaining for some reason. However, she was finally convinced and left.

She returned & did bring back her receipt. This is the gist.

    C: clerk
    SM: Store Manager
    SC: Sucky Customer
Me: waiting on someone else, thankfully
    NSC: non-sucky customer

C: Oh, I'm sorry, you paid with a credit card. I won't be able to give you cash. I'll get the credit refund slip.
SC: But I paid that bill.
    C (puzzled): Um, okay.
SC: So I want my money.
C: You paid with a credit card. I have to fill out a credit refund. Your card will be credited for the amount.
SC: But I paid the bill. I want my money.
C: You'll get your money on your bill. It will be credited to your account.
SC: I have paid that bill & I want my money.
C: I cannot do a cash refund for a credit card sale. Let me call the manager.

    SM: Yes?
SC (getting louder): First, she says that she can't give me a refund without a receipt & now she won't give me a refund at all.
*SM: Well, ma'am, you paid with a credit card. Company policy is that we cannot give a cash refund for a credit purchase.
SC (yelling): But I paid that bill already. Why can't I have my money.*
repeat from * to * with several attempts to explain how credit refunds work, when you've paid off your entire balance, etc.
SM: Ma'am, the money that we refund will be a credit on your card. You will have that money available. So you can use it on your next purchase.
    *fills out appropriate forms*
SC (still yelling): I want my money! You are cheating me. I'm never coming in here again!
    Me:
    NSC: (muttered) Good riddance.

Some credit card companies, after a certain amount of time, will send you a check for the amount of over payment. I once had this happen where I overpaid by $5, and a refund check was sent three months later!

Somehow, I think this twit is going to run out of places to shop. That's standard operating procedure for every retailer out there that accepts credit cards.

I later found out (admittedly from a 2ndary source) that it's state law not to give cash back on credit card refunds.

I would just be so overjoyed that you take back cut fabric with no restocking fee or anything that I would be too stunned to talk thru the whole transaction.

I'm with you there, Auntiem. Granted, even if I get the fabric home, realize I can't use it right then, I store it. I have five 30 gallon tubs full of "accidental" and "I'll use it eventually" purchases.

I'm the same way. But change "fabric" to "tools" and there you have it. I have so many tools I could open my own hardware store.

It is a good way to get cash from a stolen credit card - buy something with the stolen card and then get a cash refund. Hence the reason it is not allowed.

In Australia Credt card issuers won't let you give cash refunds on credit card purchases so people can't give themselves 'cash advances' without the standard credit card fees. The amount of time I had to explain that to a CS

Especially since it was going to be sold as remnants at 2/3 the original price. It was not going to be sold again for the same price.
