I'll admit to both using large bills on small purchases and the reverse, but . . . dude, it's REALLY obvious in both cases that you're imposing. The least you can do is be polite!
(Hit the grocery store at open once with a bunch of pennies/nickels to buy a candy bar, and the lady even asked me if I'd like to get the rest of my coins changed. That was five years or so ago and I still haven't forgotten . . . really nice of her.)

I do the same. If it is the absolute last bill in my wallet and it is a $100. I don't care, I will use it. I am not going to go to the bank just to get change for it and then come back and shop again.
At my last job, we would just have a very small amount in the til at all times. If someone came in and bought a soda for 50 cents, and try to pay for it with a $100.00 bill, then I would have to take it, if the owner was in. And I would always have him go to another business to get change.

i had a lady come into my line when i worked at walmart, and had a huge line. she said "can i give some coins?" and i said sure, and she proceeded to dump a gallon ziplock bag full of dimes and pennies on my conveyor belt. when i counted it all, it added up to 74 dollars.
