More funny than sucky. I was reading another ID thread and was reminded of this story.
It was a slow night in our grocery store. I was watching self check and cleaning, there was only one cashier on register. In my wanderings around the self check trying to find something else to clean, I sort of notice two boys dressed to the nines. They looked to be 18 or 19 years old at most. What made them stand out was that they were wearing obviously expensive suits. Not the "I just clocked out of the office and I want to grab a quick tv dinner before I pass out for the night" suit, but well tailored suits. The baseball hats they were wearing didn't quite go with the suits, but hey they're young. Even with baseball hats on the suits didn't quite fit in with the area of the store or a Wallyworld grocery store, but to each their own. I went about my business.
A very short time later the cashier calls me over. I see one of the well dressed boys at her register. Cashier says "He was with another boy who left right before I scanned his beer. I need to see the other boys ID and this one doesn't believe me." At the time we had to card everyone in the group even if only one person was buying beer. I did see the boys together (thanks to their stand out suits and choice of hats with said suits) and they both looked young enough that I definitely needed to see some ID. They very well could be old enough and just look young, they very well could be (oddly dressed) undercover cops. I tell boy the rule and he doesn't argue with me. He makes a hand gesture and looks over somewhere behind me. I turn around and I see boy #2 making his way over to the register. I'm guessing he was trying to lurk out of sight. They didn't seem like they were going to give the cashier any more problems, she was experienced at fake IDs and underage kids trying to buy alcohol so I knew she could handle herself. I leave the register.
I should have stayed at the register. 30 seconds later I hear the cashier calling me. I turn around and see her holding two IDs and trying not to laugh. I go over and she hands me the IDs, not trusting herself to speak. I take a look at the first ID. At a glance it could be boy #1. Upon closer inspection, I had my doubts. Then I look at the other ID, then look again. It was the exact same picture as the other ID, with the same name, the same address, same ID#, same everything. They were exactly the same. I look closely at boy #2 out of curiousity at this point since these are quite fake and realize he doesn't remotely look like the picture at all. The picture had a brown haired, very suntanned, brown eyed man in it. Boy #2, was blond haired, very pale, and had blue eyes. He was also not even close to the 6'1 height listed on the ID.
My first thought is to call the police but I also had issues trying not to laugh. I managed to get out "You guys know these are the exact same ID, right?" and couldn't hold it in anymore. As soon as I busted out laughing so did the cashier. Boy #1 ran by me, grabbing the IDs out of my hand and ran out the door with boy #2 on his heels. I did see them run to a waiting car and managed to get a license number. I asked the manager if I should call the cops and he said not to bother, they didn't take the beer with them so he didn't care.
Even if they were trying to pull a "oh, we're twins" thing, the exact same name and same ID# just wasn't going to work. Also, if you're going to try and be twins, try picking a partner in crime that at least looks somewhat like the picture on the ID. They didn't even attempt a story though. Either they knew the jig was up or they were hoping we would let them have the beer out of pity for their lame fake ID attempt.
