Also the refusal to license it out to other companies. They don't seem to be making quite the same mistakes with Blu-ray this time, but it's still early.
BluRay Hardware suppliers: Sony, Pioneer, Philips, and Samsung
    HD-DVD Hardware suppliers: Toshiba
    Multi-format HD Players: LG

Movie Companies 100% Behind BluRay: Sony, Disney, 20th Century Fox, and now Warner Brothers
Movie Companies 100% Behind HD-DVD: Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios

Unless something major happens, the scales seem to tilt in favor of BluRay.

At least some people are attempting new technology. My mom's still afraid of the CD player.

It would be nice if the manufacturer's of these "next generation" DVDs would make some more obvious distinctions between the various discs. I still have dozens of customers who don't know the differences between CDs and DVDs, let alone Dual-Layer DVDs, R versus RW, or how HD-DVD and Blu-Ray fit into the mix.

Some think that HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray Discs are the same thing. It's been surprisingly hard to explain the difference to them. I know all this new technology can be confusing--it still throws me off from time to time--but I shouldn't have to explain such a simple concept twenty times to a person who claims to need a new computer for graduate school and is curious about the possibility of burning CDs.
What ever you do when asked for Blank DVDs, do NOT ask if they need - or + R's. I get a headache every time when I'm done explaining in the full technical terminology just to shut them up. It's even worse when they ask HOW to copy a DVD movie, I may know how to burn a DVD (and shrink from a Dual Layer to Single) but I'll be damned if I am going to be your personal 'Google' on illegal subject matter.

When it comes the High-Def discs I just say Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are like Beta-max and VHS. Although Sony will win this time (well I hope so personally). It kinda makes sense to most of them.

I hear Paramount are leaving HD-DVD soon.

Yeah, I think so too. They did learn. But there's always mistakes possible that can swing it hard the other way.

BLU-Ray Vs. HD-DVD will really be settled when the Porn industry make a decision one way or the other. Believe it or not, but the porn industry's leanings greatly influence what video technology eventually is adopted by the mainstream.

Right now, many in the industry havn't really embraced HD tech as quickly, in my opinion, because it is more expensive to shoot in HD, and it show off blemishes on the actors and actresses that in the are easier to cover up in traditional recording. And, let's face it, adult cinema isn't known for spending a ton of money on productions, except for a noted few exceptions.

Agreed at this point though I'm pretty certain Blu-Ray will win but like you said porn industry can change that they are ones who got us VHS after all... (I too younf but I think i woulda preferred beta max to win... how often do you see a filled 6hour tape aside from recording your shows...)

Beta is still around, the tv industry uses the various forms of betacam tapes. We have 3 different types at work. So much better than VHS, even the non broadcast quality stuff but pretty pricey. People freak out when I tell them a 30 min tape will cost them about $60.

People always get confused by formats. Never ending battle at work and I'm sick of explaining to people that a DVD will not play in their computer unless it had a DVD drive.

Try asking them if they think that a reel of movie film would play in a reel to reel tape drive. See if that helps. It probably won't, but as I've said before I'm an optimist.
I'm sorry, the person to whom you were speaking has been replaced by a recording. Please leave your message at the sound of the beep.
