Before the War on foreigners Terrorism, nobody really cared about Australia Day. There was a parade that some people watched, but that was about it. These days it's hugely nationalistic, every third car has Australian flags on it, people ramble on about "Australian values", idiots like the one in the OP are at their most visible, you have yobbos starting fights then claiming the people they were fighting are "un-Australian"...

And then there's people like Sam Keckovic and his "Invite the neighbours around, if you can't pronounce their name just call them Mate" routine.

To me, Aussie day is an excuse to get REALLY drunk, where thongs in public and run around being a looney with a flag around my neck like a super hero cape. At least thats what my friends told me I was doing. Aussie day tends to get outta hand very easily here.

      EDIT: Please note sarcasm.

        roudy drinking? ... Never!

just laughing i remember going on a company trip to sydney & brisbane and overheard one of the guys talking about what happened to him at the bar... He'd broken a glass by accident, apologized to the bartender and offered to pay for the damage. I think he kinda surprised the woman, but then she pointed out the rowdy guys in the back and said they already had a budget for glasses cos they have several break every night.

But.. they can be fun too. Especially when watching Aussie-Rules Football. (There's "rules"?)

I live in the US. 99% of the population were immigrants at some point in their family history/blood line.

heck my dad's side of the family still lives in "the old country"(Sicily)-he was on a work visa, left shortly after my mom got preggers-most of my mom's side came over right before/during WWII(German Jews)*-I have no problem with much of anyone really.

          * a few came over after WWI to get "settled" and send for the rest-we got as many as we could out-but some didn't make it
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

            *waves at fellow aussie*

That really sucks. I was lucky enough I saw nothing like that where I was on Australia day. I was watching the fireworks and there were people of all races ages and levels of intoxication around without any problems. I really hate people like that!
