My first day back at work and this happens:

A woman comes to my register with her son, who looks to be about 12 years old. The woman asks me if we carry "Hustler" magazine. (for those who dont know, "Hustler" is an "adult" magazine filled with nekked women).

    I say "no we dont."

What does she do? She turns to her son and says:

"No they dont have it. We'll have to stop by the beer store later and get it."

WTF?? I told my manager this and she said: "Maybe it was for a school project or something."

Yeah right. I wish I went to that school.

    Olive juice you too.

Whoa. That's amazing. Either she is the most permissive, free-thinking woman in the world, or she is the most clueless twit in the universe. I'm not sure which thought disturbs me more, that a woman would purchase Hustler for her adolescent son or that a grown woman wouldn't know what Hustler was.

The kid probably convinced her that Hustler is a magazine for pool and billiard enthusiasts.

Actually, for anyone who has not seen it, it is one of the most disgusting of its genre.

The fact that she says they will be stopping by "the beer store" to get it, tells me she probably knows full well what it is...

maybe she's teaching him about the birds and the bees?
If she intends to use THAT as a teaching tool about such things, God help that poor kid and the society in which he will be living.

              Devil's Advocate?

I used to feel that way but now I have a teen son.
Just to give you an idea of what he's like...
He's a good kid, with good friends and he gets good grades. He isn't out running the streets like so many kids these days. He also will walk all the way across a store to put an item back exactly where he got it from instead of dumping whereever or giving it to the cashier.

Here's a conversation I had with my oldest son's father a couple of months ago:

Dad: "Guess what I did today?"
              Me: "What?"
Dad: "I found and threw out our son's nudie magazine collection."
Me: "Sorry, not surprised. Really though I'd rather him be looking at that than be out making us grandparents."
              Dad: "True."

We have since accepted that our son is human and have decided that having a couple of magazines with naked women is better than what he COULD be out doing...
I simply refuse to freak out over the fact that my child is growing up and that he has natural human curiousities and instincts. I'd rather be able to talk with him about this stuff in a calm, rational tone of voice so that I can know where he's at mentally. I could be wrong but I think our attitude will probably go a lot farther towards deterring teen sex than flipping out, screaming, denying, etc. would.

Now, I haven't personally seen a Hustler in many, many, many years so I'm not sure if it's nudie or porn?

Isn't it possible that she's buying it for a husband who's maybe just a tad too controlling and not sensitive to the fact that she's with her son?

I actually support the woman in the OP's story. Masturbation is healthy and it's a damn lot better than the kid sleeping around. So a thumbs up to the Hustler woman.

NightAngel: It's both, very suggestive nudity and lots of porn. I think they have stories and dirty cartoons, too, but I don't remember exactly.

BiscuitMunroe: If the woman were buying the magazine for her husband, one would think their relationship is not exactly very healthy. A married man doesn't need porn.

It would have been funny if instead of throwing them out, leave them in plain sight in his room. Kid would be like, oh, crud! But he'd also know you knew, opening the possiblity he would come and talk about it, rather than trying to hide it again.

Then why not get him a national geographic and let him look at the boobie pictures? I'd hope a 12 year old boy wouldn't need to be looking at pics of girls peeing all over everything to get off. Besides, maybe he'd read some more edifying articles.

I had a lady call in for a pill identification yesterday for some stuff she found in her 11 year old's back pack. It ended up being percocet. Oh, to be a fly on the wall in that house when he got home....

I must disagree on this point, while I'm not technically married, I might as well be. And frankly, if all you have is the same ol, same ol day in and day out, you get bored. It's like having PB&J every single day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Besides that, I am not always in the mood when he is, so he has his release and I still get to go to bed early. It can also be fun to look at em together. There is nothing wrong with it.
The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.

I think the woman should have been more discreet with buying the mag for her son. She should not have let it been a public discussion while her son was present. Had the cashier been ultra-conservative, they may have copied her license plate number down and notified the authorities.

I personally don't see anything wrong with purchasing your son nudie books. They are going to "explore" themselves anyway. However, I do question the material. Hustler is not something I would purchase for my son if I had one. It could be something a little more classy and a little less degrading of women. Hell, the Victoria's Secret catalog would be enough for any young man...National Geographic...any bikini catalog...he doesn't have to see the stuff that is in Hustler.

(Not that I am a prude, I am all for sex, but I am not for the degradation of women which is how I see hard core porn or magazines like Hustler)

That is my thought on the matter.

I KNOW young teens are going to be curious, but exposing them to all that is depicted in a magazine like Hustler is (in my opinion) NOT a good thing. Those types of that genre are aimed at extremely crude and kinky fantasies - something I as a parent certainly do not think is healthy for a young teen to view.
