  • The old "I'll sue you" creeps back in...

I'm an office manager for a large rental company close to a college campus. One of our properties is kitty corner to the college, and we've been getting complaints from the tenants that people have been parking in their lot and walking to school, thus taking one of their spots.

Today as I'm walking to my car for lunch, I notice a car pull in, a kid jump out and start walking to class. I call out to him that he's not allowed to park there and the following conversation occurs:

    Me: getting meaner every day!
DK: dumb kid who thinks he's "gangsta"

Me: Excuse me, this parking is for tenants only, you can't park here.
DK: I am a tenant, I live here
Me: (knowing every tenant by name and face) No, you don't live here, I don't recognize you
DK: Well my cousin lives here and this is his spot.
Me: Regardless, you don't have a parking hangtag, so you can't "take his spot"
DK: I don't care if I don't have a hangtag, he said I can park here! Besides, there's no sign that says I need a hangtag!
Me: <Points to the sign he just parked under that says permit parking only> You will be towed if you park here, please move your car now.
DK: lady, you don't want to mess with me! You tow my car and I'll sue you!!
Me: <Flabbergasted, and getting pissed off by this point> Sue me?? For towing your car out of a lot you don't belong in??
DK: Who the hell do you think you are lady? I'm telling you again you don't want to mess with me, you don't know who I am!!
Me: I don't give a shit who you are, just who you're not and that's someone who does not live here and will not have a vehicle parked here when you get back.

By this point I was getting a little nervous because he was a big guy, and he was starting to back me up to my truck, so I knew I needed to wrap it up.

Me: Look, I'm not going to stand here and argue with you. I'm warning you that if you leave this car parked here, it will not be here when you get back. I will call the tow truck right now and have it towed.
DK: F*&k you lady. Don't mess with me or my car. You touch my car and I'll sue you.
Me: <rolling my eyes> Do as you like kid, it's $170 to get your car out of the tow lot, just a warning.

I watched him walk off towards class still shouting about suing me if I touch his car and that I don't know who he is and I better not mess with him. So I pulled out my cell phone and called our tow company, gave them the license plate and car type and left. Unfortunately he must have decided I was serious about towing him because he came back and moved his car before the tow truck got there. I really wanted to see the look on that asshat's face when he came back to no vehicle! Better luck next time! (And you know there'll be a next time 'cause SC's never learn!)

Did he see you take out your cell phone?

He was probably hoping that his bullying would scare you. Good for you for not backing down. If he does it again don't even bother warning him, just call the towtruck.

Just call the tow truck on every person you see parked illegally. What a twat.

You're more generious than I am, when I see someone do that, I don't even warn them, I just tow them

90% of the people I tow KNOW they aren't supposed to park in a given place, they're just betting that the signs are bluffing. Sadly for them, they aren't.

The owner is very squeamish about towing people before warning them. We've had many situations where we've towed tenants who are driving their parents' car because theirs is in the shop and they forgot to grab the hangtag, or we've towed parent's cars when they come to visit little johnny or susie. Seeing as how retention of tenants is our bread and butter, we try to tag cars first or verbally warn people, and then tow them if they are stupid enough to park there again (and they usually are!) If it was up to me, I'd yank them without even blinking!

One thing that REALLY pisses me off where I live: neighbors who let their friends or bf/gf park in other people's spots. Our spots are ASSIGNED. You need a tag to park here.

Downstairs piece of shit scumbag neighbor, Tommy Lee, lets anyone park in other people's spots. It drives me INSANE.

I have already left him one threatening note pretending to be the property management company (I know, I know, wrong thing to do, but I figured it'd be better to scare him and hurt his ego and make him feel not so special), and he STILL does it....

*feels all warm and fuzzy inside*

I got someone towed just the other week.

Our complex has assigned parking and we have to register our cars with the managers. We didn't have a car for the first 8 months after we moved in. Since we didn't have a car, we didn't check our parking spot. The only time we've used it is once when we had a rental for a week, and a couple of other times when we had friends come to visit.

That all changed last month when my mom brought the car she was no longer using down and sold it to me.

We get home one day to find someone in our spot. We pull around and find a perfect guest spot and then report the car. A week later, same thing, same car, another report. The third time we called it in, the security guy said he'd send a car and if it was a repeat offense (they flier cars the first couple times), they'd have it towed.

That was two weeks ago and we haven't seen that car recently.

                ^-.-^

I've run into so many people like that. They'll always shout "D'you know who I am? D'you know who I'm with?" blah, blah, blah. I never respond to this, but one of these days I'm just gonna say. "No, I don't know who you are, or who your with, and frankly I don't care, so..." you know how it goes

I had a similar problem at one apartment complex. Neighbor would park their extra car in whatever space was available, and once too often it was mine.

I came home one day to find them parked there, and parked my pickup directly behind them, preventing them from moving out, and then proceeded to call management. I demanded that they call the tow truck, since repeated reports haven't done any good.

I sat there until the tow truck came and towed them away. I don't even think they realized it happened until they came out and saw their car gone...

Never did see said car again though.

We get this a lot - but with people parking across our driveway, blocking it. When my husband politely asked one guy to move his car, he called hubby an a-hole for not letting him block our driveway. Hubby calmly told him that no, an a-hole would not have said anything and just had the car towed...

We have to register our cars with our apartment management office. There is only one assigned spot (I use it) per apartment. There is plenty of guest parking, and definately plenty of parking on the street. I work at night, and get home around 130-145am. I came home one night and there was a car parked in my spot, which I didnt really mind, I left a note on their car asking not to park in my spot. The car didn't move for 3 days. I finally got fed up and called and got the car towed out of my spot and parked in it. Three hours later, there was pounding at my door and one pissed off guy. He screamed at me for towing his car, even though it was in my spot, because I DIDN'T TRACK HIM DOWN BEFORE I TOWED IT. Hello. I had never seen his car in the parking lot before and had no idea what apartment it belonged to since we don't have parking tags/stickers.

I reported him to our management office, since he knew where I lived due to our apartment numbers painted in our spots. Turns out the guy didn't even live in our apartment complex and was banned from being on grounds.

Ug there used to be a friend of a friend who would threaten to sue over anything.
I once borrowed a jacket and sunglasses from him and forgot to return it, and he threatened to sue me.

I could almost see him as the guy arguing with you

Not to mention the SC's who've slung that word out there over the years...and so far...never have had to get a lawyer
