i had a few interesting customers this weekend.
on saturday there was this guy who was interested in our close out rims they are about 25$ per rim so he seems excited. i notice right away something was not quite right with this guy, lucky for me when ever he came up to me i was helping someone else since he would run off and talk to one of our techs for long periods of time. one of my co workers starts to help him, i go to lunch, on my way to the break room with my dinner i see the techs putting the tires on the rims and i see something not quite right, the tires were almost completely bald, and had nails in them (that the techs pointed out) i call my co worker over and said under no circumstances were we to put bald tires on a car (they have to have tread on them cause 2/32nds of an inch is when we cant put tires on, fix or rotate them.) he said that, that is what the customer wanted. i tell him that he can sell the rims but we are not going to be putting those tires on.
the whole time the guy was running around our shop bothering our techs, completely high on some drugs (something i know the signs of quite well since i use to work in the drug and alcohol rehab field) by the time i noticed that he was in the shop (i thought he had wandered off some where else for a while) i was going to call the lp guys and have him escorted out but he had gone by that time.
apparently since one of the tires had more than 2/32nds of an inch he had us put one rim on and leave the rest on his other rims.
this one took 2 days of our time
he comes in for tires on loose rims, not so bad, he asks us to put the colored dot lined up with the valve stems not so bad, the next day, he comes back and wants us to switch 3 of the rims to the other side (ok since they were not directional tires) but if you wanted the temp rating and dot numbers facing out you should have said that first, not wait till the next day to come back and have us do it. i tell him its going to be a long wait (which was true) he said that he had no other choice since he needed the car for work the next day. ok so he might have been racing needing his tires facing out a certain way, but i really dont think so, i think he was ocd and needed to have them a certain way cause he was compelled to have it that way. (they were not the kind of tires you would race on at all btw, but you never know right)
fraud alert
a guy comes in and asks me for 4 loose tires, wants to pay with a check, and get 4 valve stems, not an unusual request.
i grab the tires (which were at the top of all the racks all over the place with the help of some of the techs, not that he would know that lol) i get the tires up front, and he has his check ready with the information written on it, i ask to see his id, to confirm his photo, and enter the information on the check, well it came up voice authorization needed, so instead of calling i decide to look at the id again, and get the # off the id, i have had it happen that i might have miss entered the # that, that box will pop up so i wanted to make sure i had the right #. i notice that i can actually see the reflective lines on the drivers licence and that they were not acting light reactive, so i ask him to take his id out of the wallet window. (i wanted to stick it under our fraud detection light. the card looked like it had been photocopied.)
he says, umm im sorry i dont do that, ill get cash, and walks out. it happens so fast that i dont notice that he has the valve stems in his hand before he leaves.
oh well at least it was 4 valve stems vs 575$ worth of tires.
