Funny thing, but apparently, if you use minimum wage as a scale, it isn't worth your time to pick up a penny. You waste more time than you'd earn.
ah, the false math of opportunity costs... if you were working minimum wage you could earn more... however you aren't working minimum wage at that time so it's a moot point (i love arguing with my econ instructor...)

What a douche bag. Stiffing you all because of something you don't have control over and to top that, you gave them top notch service!! I freaking hate when people do that to bartenders and servers. Besides that point, a lot of liquor serving restaurants tend to have Happy Hour only at the bar instead of at both the bar and tables to make more money that way.

'tis true - I've actually had serving staff recommend to me before that I buy my drinks at the bar and take it back to my table because they had 2 for 1 on cocktails :P

Frankly, I think that the system where you have to give tips to the bartender based on the gross is stupid. Split whatever tip comes or something ... but, you KNOW some folks are going to undertip. So, you end up losing money.

That being said; I wanna know why the douche took his KIDS to a bar anyways and why BOTH parents were drinking? Helllloooo, drunk driving with kids in the car.
I hate defending him specifically, but I do feel I need to explain this.

            1. We are a restaurant and a bar.
            2. They were sitting at a table, not at the bar.
            3. This is the kind of tourist town where people do a lot of walking, not driving. Once you are downtown, you really don't need to drive that much, if at all. Do I KNOW they weren't driving? No. But odds are they weren't.
            4. They had three rounds. For some people that might be a lot, but for a lot of other people, myself included, that is barely scratching the surface.

Wow....every place I have ever worked, the floor staff hates that...because it means people are taking up their tables who have not ordered anything from them. Basically it is close to taking money out of their pockets, if you follow my meaning.

I disagree. I have no problem tipping my bartender when I am on the floor. Hell, the other night, after having a LOT of alcohol sales, I tipped my bartender $23.....and was HAPPY to do so.

Ah, thanks for the clarification Jester!

I should probably clarify, we were having a meal at the time too, and we did leave a tip :P

Yeah, I've always understood that the penny is 'No, I did not forget to leave a tip. Your service was so bad/I'm so pissed that I am living this penny just to drive the message home how upset I am"

Personally, I've gotten to the point that if I'm that upset with the waiter, I'm talking to the manager. I think I've been that upset with a waiter twice. The first time we just walked out. Since we didn't even have our drinks, no dine&dash involved. The 2nd we talked to the manager & saw our waiter crossing the parking lot about the same time our new waiter showed up.

OTOH, because I felt so bad about being part of the last table on Sunday (& I mean laaaast table), I think I left a 50% tip. I'm not certain because I just emptied my wallet of everything but the change and stopped counting after I reached 30%.

But wow. OP qualifies as Jerkmeister of the Month & he's in the running for Jerkmeister of the Year.
