  • Crappy Day, Funny Ending

So, my day today was pretty much stressful and nerve-wracking, but the last call I took after closing made me laugh.

<I work in the delivery joint. We close at 11>.

    Call comes in about 11:30:

Me: Thank you for calling <my store>, I'm sorry we're closed.
Guy: Everything here closes so early. I gotta get out of <my city>.

He wasn't sucky, mad, or even making a joke about it.
He said it so matter-of-factlike that it just struck me as funny.

I too work delivery and we close at midnight at get that occasionally. now this is in a somewhat small upper midwestern town where almost everything else closes and the sidewalks roll up at 9pm. . That guy should try living in a town where everything is closed by 6 pm.

And how exactly does that happen. Do they once every year have a meeting to decide when everyone should close?

Town bylaw actually. A place that's open beyond it gets fined. It's most common in small towns and rural areas.

In the UK most places (unless you're a supermarket, in a mall, or have applied for extended opening hours) close at around 5:30/6. The only places that stay open over night tend to be petrol stations, or in London. On sundays, unless you are under a certain size, you can ONLY be open 6 hours. One day a week, most cities and larger towns places have a late-night opening, where you are allowed to open to a 'reasonable late hour'.

On our late-night day (we don't do it, we'd lose more money then we'd make) we get pople HAMMERING on the door as I'm closing, cause we're relatively close to the centre of town.
              Stupid people.

I did that kinda thing a lot when I first moved to Phoenix. When I lived in NJ in the suburbs, we had a chain of 24hr convenience store/delis, and down the street from me was a pizzeria that sold burgers and other fast food items as well, originally open to 4AM until the Police made them close at 12AM (they also sold singles there). Papa John's and Dominos were open until 12AM, 1AM on Fri and Sat. Came out to Phoenix, virtually nothing 24hrs, Dominos and PJ's close at 11PM, so on and so forth. Wait, I moved from the suburbs to the city, and things close earlier...

                  I think that's pretty funny.
We've got pizza places that deliver to 4 am on weekends, so

HA! In some towns in SA, if a shop stays open till 6pm on a Saturday or Sunday, you're bloody lucky. They close at 1

You know, in a small town or the suburbs, that wouldn't surprise me at all, but you really expect in a big city that you can get whatever you want whenever you want... except in Phoenix.
