  • Yes Mam we pirate DvDs

Had this one happen today. Now I have to say I'm pretty lucky with my current job. I work in the DvD Department of a major Australian Electronic chain. It's never really overly busy and the customers are really nice hence sucky customers stand out more now.

So I get paged to the counter where I meet as I like to refer to her now Conspiracy Lady (CL)

Me: Hi what seems to be the problem?
CL: (angry voice) This DvD isn't working. There is no sound.
Me: No worries I'll test in our machines and see what happens.

Whenever we get 'faulty' DvD's we always have to test it at one of our store units to see we if we can replicate the fault. Most of the times it's some error on the customer's side equipment but I give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

So anyway I start playing the DvD and there really is no dialog. I.e. there is background audio but when the characters speak there is no sound.

Me: Wow that's strange. Not a worry we'll swap it over.

The DvD was a new release and quite popular and I was pretty sure we sold out this morning but I nevertheless checked all the spots it could be but as I predicted - all gone!

Me: I'm really sorry but we've all sold out. However our other store at X (about 10 minutes drive) has some in stock. If you want me I could get them to put some aside for you.
CL: (frustrated) Oh no that's too far...*mumbles something in anger*

I then proceed to tell her all other surrounding stores that would have it in stock (though further away). She is obviously not happy but she is still determined to get the DvD since she also refuses a refund.

ME: I could always order one in for you but it would take around 7-10 days.

CL is frustrated but in the end sees that there is no other option so I take her to the counter.
On the way there she rants about how annoyed she is about the whole thing. We arrive at the counter and then she drops the bomb shell

CL: Could it be that the DvD is PIRATED!!!
    ME:

"Yes Mam we're one of Australia's major DvD retailers and we pirate DvD's. OH NO YOU CAUGHT US!!!!"

I didn't say that (sadly) but instead tried to explain to her how when DvD's are mass produced there will always be a few duds and she is the first person to have a problem with this particular DvD title.

I was actually pretty nice and ended up getting another store to transfer one over so it won't take as long as ordering. I hope it gets lost in transit

Granted it was a little strange, and dumb question. But why hope that? She really did get a dud on whatever movie it was. Not her fault.

Try getting a dud every time you buy a particular game (EA Games, Sims Deluxe 2, each one of the Seven, yes SEVEN, were blank). Very annoying.

I don't know. It sounds to me like she was being a major PITA about it. Sure, it wasn't her fault that the DVD was defective, but it sounds to me like the OP gave her several different options to correct it, none of which pleased her.

Maybe I'm mean, but after dealing with her, I'd probably secretly wish it to get lost too.

That's exactly right. I always go out of my way to help people. Even suggest other places where they could get DvD's from (i.e. various websites).
This woman however treated me like I personally stuffed up the disc and that I should make a new copy appear out of thin air.

Having slept over it however I don't really care anymore. Hope she gets her copy soon so the situation is resolved

My family's had a few DVDs be band sound-wise -- and unfortunately it was a MASTER disk problem (i.e. every copy in our area had the exact same sound issue at the exact same places).

So while I doubt it's that in her case, I sure hope it isn't otherwise you'd have to deal with her many, many times!

First- i saw no worries all the time, and people look at me funny. Is this an Australian thing i somehow picked up?

                    Second-
Ron white- I was just being a smartass, and I said, "Yeah. They call me, "Tater Salad!" " Seventeen years later, I'm handcuffed on a bench in New York with blood coming out of my nose, and this cop goes, "Are you Ron 'Tater Salad' White?" Ya caught me! Ya caught the tater!

Who knows maybe I moved to Australia 7 years ago from Europe and it seems to be an 'unofficial' Australian motto; "No worries mate!"

I use it all the time now
