  • Why do most of the idiots out there come up to my line 5 minutes before we close?!

Yes, you heard right. I get all kinds of idiot customers. Who doesn't? Well, how many of you get them 5 or 10 minutes before the store closes? This happens every other night to me, and I'm trying to finish out my line so I can get started on my closing duties and go home.
    I have slow people.
Customers who just have to go back and get another item.
Customers that forget their credit card, cash, etc.
Customers who find it necessary to question the price of items.
Customers that keep giving me stuff they don't want, resulting in more crap we have to put back.
    And then these customers....
2 girls came up to my register buying clothes and a few other things. They ask me, "Can you help us make sure these are all XS?", to which I respond, "I'm sorry, that's not my job." Since when is it my job to help them decide what to buy? It isn't, and I'm not doing it.
They then proceed to hold up every item and look at it, and then decide if they want it. After all this, 1 of them says, "I'm sorry, I just got out of the hospital." I felt sympathy for this girl, but she looked like she still belonged in the hospital. She appeared to be breathing heavily. I'm not so sure she escaped from the hospital.
After waiting for payment, she finally announces that she forgot her credit card in her car. So I have to wait for her to go get it, and guess what? Yes, she takes a long time. And then to top it all off, they have trouble unlocking the door to let her back in. And in the meantime, I'm still at my register, and I want to get off and do my closing duties.
Once again, this stuff always seems to happen 5 or 10 minutes before we close. The rest of the day is alright. I'm about to go insane!

They can smell the desperation rising off you. It's the pheromones.

However, I probably would have helped them check the clothes for size, whether I considered it my job or not, if only to get them out the door that much faster.

In September-ish one year, when all the bathing suits are on OMG Must Sell Now! Sale - like $3-10, I had a woman come up to my register 15 minutes before close with 60-70 bathing suits. She basically bought out all of them to resell on eBay next spring.

It took right up until close for me to deal with her, and the other cashier had to handle all the other customers we had.

The reason that so many last minute shoppers are sucky is that for the most part, non-sucky people don't shop at the last minute.

The ratio between non-sucky and sucky swings to the sucky side when it's the last minute.

Well, would you rather have one person who comes in rather latish and buys out everything you have, or have to deal with a mix of good and sucky customers all the time while selling them?
