Gas drive off SC

Tuesday was my day off and as I am watching TV around 9am, I hear an aproaching siren. As I look over out the window, a Highway Patrol cruser flies by. Now I am wondering "what is a Highway patrol car doing running lights and sirens in a residental neighborhood?"

I go to my front door and what do I see?

5 Police cars
1 detective car
4 deputy sheriff cars
3 highway patrol cars
1 highway patrol SUV and
1 highway patrol plane circling overhead

all around a white lincoln.

I now know why, $60 worth of gas.

Yes, a guy (just out of jail) drives off after not paying for $60 worth of gas. The station attendent called the police (and got put on hold) while our brain dead SC speeds away at about 100 mph...... in front of a Highway patrol officer!

They chase him out to the highway and back into town and down over a railroad crossing near my house. If you go over this crossing at any speed, you will go airborn and he did blowing out two tires. Some how he made it a block away from me and dumped his car and took off on foot.

Of course, the vehice ID had his name on it and they caught him at his home. Now he has violated his parole, ruined his car and of course burned up the $60 worth of gas he stole.

Something tells me he is better off in jail.

With prices going as high as they are I suspect we will start seeing more stations with mandatory pre-pay before filling up, due to this kind of behavior (Florida is one such state that requires drivers to pre-pay before getting gas).

Most places here in Colorado do that, either by using your card at the pump, or by paying cash ahead of time. I only know of one station that doesn't do that, which happens to be the cheapest place around to pump gas.

Of course, that doesn't help when you pick up the premium pump and use it instead of regular unleaded....

Pre-pay is the only way to maintain sanity anymore. Anything else is just asking for trouble from drive-offs or SC/EW whining.

I live in Florida and you're right about this, except I do not believe it's been implemented all over the state yet. In areas like Palm Beach, Broward, and especially Dade counties where more crimes occur, there isn't a gas station around that permits pumping before paying. I am rather certain all cities and counties will follow this example eventually though. Maybe restaurants will do that as well: "Pay first, then eat."

None of the stations around here are pre-pay, Only a couple that are prepay after 10;00 PM.

In Houston a lot of times there are high speed chases and an innocent person gets killed, so in the media there is a lot of editorials about how there shouldn't be high speed chases. Like "They got the plate number, they can find the perp at home". Then there are people who say, "well, what if it's a car jacking and there's a kid in the back seat?"

It's worth it to let these people know they wont be able to get away with it. Depending on the area most likely all officers involved were nearby and not involved in anything else. In our area when something happens, anyone not doing anything tends to show up.

Plus, if the guy was driving like crazy, he could've plowed some innocent people over or done some property damage. Better to get the loony off the road.

Back on topic, pre-pay makes the most sense to me, and I can't understand why people make such a whingefest out of it. It's hardly a Herculean effort to pre-pay.

I'm in Indiana, and I don't think it's mandatory statewide yet, but most of our stations are prepay. I used to work at one of the ones that wasn't, and we had our share of these situations, unfortunately.

Every one I go to around Indy is prepay. It's a good idea.

And yeah, they need to get that guy off the street.
