Where I get gas, the only option is pay at the pump. There is no cash at all on premises. They have this clearly posted, but I'm willing to bet that people still ask if they can pay cash. I have a friend who works there, I'll ask him the next time I see him & let you guys know what he says.

I hear you there erik. I'm in northwestern Wisconsin, about an hour from LaCrosse, and very few stations are prepay. In fact, Kwik Trips and larger gas stations aren't prepay. The only prepay station in this city is a mom and pop one.

I can see how some people don't pre-pay because they don't know how much they need to pay to fill up the tank. Though I think it should always be pre-paid, since a lot of people will run off not paying.

I think in Texas they have a law or something where if you don't pay for your gas your DL will be revoked. Though who stops people w/o licenses from driving.

I don't get the whingefest, either.

If you pay with a credit/debit card, it doesn't matter how much it takes to fill up. Once you've hung up the pump, that's where it stops.

You only have to go back if you want a receipt.

With prices going as high as they are I suspect we will start seeing more stations with mandatory pre-pay before filling up, due to this kind of behavior (Florida is one such state that requires drivers to pre-pay before getting gas).
Wow! Finally, a state grew a pair and is willing to say to consumers "we're not going to let you run the show 100% of the time"

Most people are decent enough, but laws are meant to protect against those who abusive our goodfellowship.

Indiana, and my home state of West Virginia have the same law that I know of. I suspect many others do as well. Drive off, and you'll be walking.

I live in Indiana and there are signs at the gas station I use warning that your DL will be revoked if you pump and run. Most of the stations where I live have the pumps that they can watch (the closest pumps to the door) set up so you can pump and then pay. The rest of the pumps are prepay. I really don't know why people have such a problem with paying at the pump. I find it much more convenient, and the receipt printer is on the pump so you don't have to go inside to get it. Of course, sometimes you get a message after pumping that the receipt is available inside. But this doesn't happen very often. On those occasions, I just record it in my register as soon as I get back in the car so I don't forget.

I rather like paying at the pump for my gas. The only downside is when I want to go in and buy a soda. If only you could have soda machines by the pumps... but then that would be a hassle to refill, wouldn't it?

Personally I never heard of any non prepay gas station. I just assumed it would be common sense.

Non prepay stations are still common in the southeast I think.

I have not heard of any pre-pay petrol stations here in the UK. I've been to a couple that appear to have payment equipment on the pumps but I've never seen it in use.

I'm in Southeastern Wisconsin, about halfway between Madison and Milwaukee. Not a single station in my town is pre-pay.

in madison-not many pre-pay but there are a few, some are only pre-pay if you aren't a regular(like the one I can turn my head and see out the window-directly across the street)
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

Whoa, sounds like the county spent just a tad more than 60 dollars in gas to get him.

Pretty much not unless you find an independently owned (as in, no brand at all) gas station in the rural sticks.

'Course, most of those have a guy named "Jed" working on trucks and they only take cash.

I think it depends on the area. Where I'm at, I'd say every gas station I've been to is set for pre-pay. There may still be a handful of stations that aren't, but even the ones who don't have the credit card machines at the pumps are pre-pay.
