I'm pretty sure most of the station's here are pre-pay. I don't know since I've been using Sam's for over a year. And they're generally the lowest price. (Currently $3.38/gal)

Pay-at-the-pump is a brilliant idea....except for the fact that we have a lot of people that are paid cash here for certain "reasons". (Which is another rant in and of itself and one day I'll post it on Fratching! )

Pre-pay or not depends on where you are, totally. I don't know about other countries but here in the US, pre-pay stations are more likely to exist in urban or suburban areas; in fact in most urban areas they all tend to be pre-pay. Rural areas often have some, if not all gas stations which are post pay. Of course this depends on the area, but I have found it is mostly divided up by population density.

Rural gas stations are more likely to have the same repeat customers who all live in the same area and the station owner is familiar with them, leading to less drive offs.

Most of the stations where I live have the pumps that they can watch (the closest pumps to the door) set up so you can pump and then pay. The rest of the pumps are prepay.
That's how the stations around here do it. All of the ones within the line of sight of the cashier you can still pump, then pay, but if they're out of sight, then they're pre-pay only. For a while, right after Katrina, /everybody/ went pre-pay because the drive-offs increased. Most have went back to the original arrangement, but there are a few that still have pre-pay on all of their pumps because of that.

California's pretty much all prepay, that I know of. I even remember when it happened, vaguely. I still don't get the fuss.

Nearly all of the pay at the pump stations I've been to (all Arco, since they're chaper and sometimes even better than the other local stations) have been set to accept cash or card, which I think is brilliant.
