Whew! I am so glad I am not the only one who does this! I was starting to worry about myself.

I don't think the check-out counters at any of the grocery stores I frequent is really set up to make it easy for the customer to help bag.
At Meijer, the counter curves around the bagging gondola (it's neat; it's like a carousel of groceries!), so in order for me to help, I'd have to actually walk around behind the counter.
At Target, I would love to help out, except that all the bags are on the cashier-side.
And at Jewel (don't go there much anymore!), the bagging area is too small to accommodate more than half a person.
I dunno. It seems like corporate doesn't want customers helping out. Maybe it's because they figure they don't need a customer's "help""At any time, for any reason and without any warning, a meteor could fall from the sky and kill us all."

easy as 1,2,...4?
I usually do this too...dry products, meat, dairy, vegetables, fruit...and some comment that they've never seen this before (some, if not most cashiers whip it down the belt). I figure that people are spending $50-350 in groceries, so why damage said products for them?HI, I'M NEW TO ALL OF THIS wave of approval™©®

I put all the boxed packages of stuff together, all the refrgerated stuff together - milk, juice, lunch meat, cheeses, - stuff in sort of flat refrigerated packages, the bread and eggs together (I figure that the bread can go with the eggs because neither would do much harm to the other plus if they are in one bag, I am not fumbling with two separate fragile parcels), then cans and jars, then toiletries.

(when I went shopping yesterday, I thought about this board!!!! I was on the look out for SCs to write about!)
This area is left blank for a reason.

I join the ranks of those that do this. I make angry faces at Mr Fang if he doesn't do it right. My mother was a checkout operator when I was about 12 or so, and she instilled this habit in me.
The thing I've noticed though, is the trolley re-pack. We don't have baggers, they put the stuff into an empty trolley and hand you a couple of bags and you wheel it off and bag it yourself at bagging stations on the back wall, after paying. I sort the items onto the belt, and then when the cashier puts them in her empty trolley, the items all fit perfectly. Everything is stacked nicely. Heavy stuff at one end. Boxes together. Everying fitting in with everything else, beautifully neat.
I wish they'd layout the store so that I could do that on my way around it. Tall heavy things in aisle one, cans in aisle two, frozens in aisle three, bread just before checkouts, etc.

I've only been a cashier for about a year, but i love it when people organize their groceries. Nothing is more irritating than having a customer complain about how you bagged their things when they throw them in a pile in the first place.
Sometimes i'll reach across the lane to get like items, but only when the customer deserves it. If the customer is stupid, i'll bag them the same order i scan them.
We don't use baggers, and we have those turn-ey bag things, so its really best if the customer doesn't help. When it is busy i get into a rhythm of sorts and the customers get in my way more than they help.
My newest pet-peeve? people who request items double bagged in paper on a busy day.

We have to bag all of their stuff, I never expect the customer to pack their own bags. Actually, I prefer to pack their bags 'cause it makes the line go quicker for me ... Dunno, that's just me!'Our brightest days are yet to shine'

Quoth orcprincess View PostI try to bag my own stuff, just because I dislike grocery shopping, and want to get out quickly. Usually, I get dirty looks from the baggers, or the cashiers, and they have actually said things like "we pay people to do this, ya know"
So, sometimes, I just let them bag it, and go about my merry way.
We don't actually have people employed as baggers - if there's one there, it's a cashier with nothing to do. I usually do it for half an hour when I start my shift on Saturday, because the girl I'm relieving doesn't clock off until 12:30, and my shift starts at 12, so I don't have a till. People smile at me when I do that, because they get out of the ungodly rugby scrum faster.God made me a cannibal to fix problems like you.- Angelspit, '100%'
I'm sorry, I'm not authorised to give a f**k.
