  • Popcorn perplexity

I've had a good week. I've finished my training to be a projectionist and I had my first shift on my own on Friday night running the films, which was cool, if a little nerve wracking.

Then I'm back downstairs on Saturday night, and as usual I'm on kisok. It's warm weather, so we were pretty quiet until around 8pm. Not to mention we have 2 out of 8 screens of Speed Racer, which has bombed. So not the toughest night of work ever.

But I do get this gem:

A couple come up to my position, let's call the SCM and SCW.

SCM: I'd like a medium popcorn and a coke.
Me: Would you like sweet or salted popcorn?
    SCM: ...
    Me: ...
    SCM: ...
I'm not sure if he has heard, plus there's a queue, so I ask again.
    Me: Sweet or salted pocorn.
    SCM: ...
SCW: You can have it salted or plain.
    Me, thinking it isn't plain.
    SCM: Salted.

So I get his salted popcorn, put it on the counter and pour his coke. I notice he has his hand in the popcorn, tasting it. I finish pouring his coke.

    SCM: I wanted sweet.
    Me: Sure.

I get him some sweet. He pays and goes to watch his film.

Seriously, there are two options, it isn't a difficult choice, chose one and don't get it wrong.

Speed Racer bombed? Hmm...I was on the fence about seeing that.

And I had no idea that there is a "sweet" popcorn...the first thing that came to my mind was caramel popcorn...which I love!

        Wow. Who would have guessed?
        "Wouldn't that be unethical?"

Yeah, I wasn't quite sure if I wanted to see it - I'm only half-assed interested in it. However, I can't wait for Kung-fu Panda and Wall-E to come out. I'm such a kid at heart!

We have three sorts of popcorn - sweet, salted and bags of Butterkist Toffee.

Sweet may be an English thing, when we get customers of other nationalities they tend to ask for salted. We don't do butter though.

We had two screens with Speed Racer, and only 27 customers on the opening night. Granted the good weather is a factor, but that is abysmal.

What what what? You must have posted while I was replying...no butter?

My customers will drown their corn in the stuff and ask for more.

Hey, Becks, I was thinking kettle corn, too. I prefer butter and salt, though I did just get one of those new Orville Reddenbacher flavors which is salt and cracked pepper. Haven't tried it yet.

I was on the "movie committee" when I was in college. When I first started the guy who was in charge didn't have any of the girls project. When my friend (a girl) took over she made sure everyone knew how to work the projectors. The good(?) part was that the projectors were notoriously crappy and it was almost expected that they would break down at some point during the film, so it took some of the pressure off . I once projected a 3-reel movie on one projector. We made an announcement before the movie that there would be a brief "intermission" between reels...we used the second projector to rewind the finished reels (the light wasn't working or something).

My senior year we brought in some "classic" movies (ie, we could use the VCR instead of the projector). The best was the weekend we did the Indiana Jones trilogy (all three movies with a 20 minute intermission in between).

No buttered popcorn?! What the hell, man?! I like lots of butter on my popcorn! (And I'm a skrawny stick)

Oh, Iron Man was good! Much better then I was expecting and I grew up with the comic books!

5 screens?! The only time we've had 5 screens of anything was Harry Potter last year. But then we only have 8.

We've got two screens of Iron Man, which hasn't done badly. Forgetting Sarah Marshall did relatively good business this weekend, even after 3 weeks, cos Russell Brand is popular.

Sadly we got two prints of Speed Racer and didn't get Doomsday.

Yeah, that's about right. It is wierd working in a locked room by yourself. But it is considerably more pay and there are no customers.

And how many jobs do you you get paid to watch films, and spend time reading your book or watching TV? (OK in the past few weeks I've had to watch Made of Honour, Forgetting Sarah Marshal and 27 Dresses).

Now when you say "sweet" popcorn do you mean like caramel popcorn? Because caramel popcorn during a movie would be great.

Why the hell have I not thought of it before?
