I wanted to state that my sister actually suffered from temporary vision loss after a bratty kid pointed a laser to her eye. She had to be brought to an E.R. ophthalmologist, had to wear an eye patch for a week and sunglasses for a month. Also, her glasses prescription went up a notch.

According to Difdi's post, it must have been a Class 3 laser. But apparently, in '98 or '99, those were common enough for a junior high school kid to get a hold of one.

So, don't be fooled : those things can be dangerous, especially in the hands of idiotic, careless kids.
I was in the checkout line at a sporting goods store, and they had laser pointers as impulse sales items. A kid in front of me was playing with one and caught me in the eye with it. A week later, I still had not recovered fully, and made a trip to the eye doctor. Thankfully, there was no permanent damage done. I am extremely paranoid about my eyes--I won't even consider wearing contact lenses.

The kid in the OP should have had the laser confiscated, and been reamed out by his mother and/or the store manager.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

And it will still cause vision problems.

And I'm fairly certain you can still stick someone with an assault charge for shining one in your eyes, though I'm not sure it's worth the hassle.
Correct on both counts. Someone was charged with assault for shining one in the eyes of a ride operator at Hersheypark, an amusement park that's not far from me. The operator claimed that it caused some pain and some vision loss.

Don't remember how it turned out, but someone can be charged for pointing one of those in someone's eyes.

I'd count attack in the eye with a light beam as assault.
I have hypersensitivity. To just about Everything sensory related. My vision is over 20/20, but it's never been actually tested since the doctors just know it's "good" and call that enough. I often wear polarized sunglasses outside because it's just too darn bright, it HURTS.
If anybody hit me in the eye with a laser you can bet I'd either give them the telling off of a lifetime or maybe even press charges, depending on how bad it is.
