Have I mentioned on here how I hate Tuesdays? Because it's traditionally (around here anyway) the cheapest day of the week for fuel, it's ultra-busy and all the misers come in. I have this conversation at least five times every Tuesday:

SC: Do you know anything about the price of diesel?
Me: Only that I change the price when the boss tells me to.
SC: It takes so much less effort to refine than petrol! It's blatant profiteering! etc. etc.

today one of them finished their rant with "...and you look like you don't even care what I think."

My response: "Have a nice day sir."

What I would have said if I could get away with it: "Maybe that's because I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK! My care factor dropped below zero the second I gave you your change. I told you I have no control over prices but you refused to listen and started whinging anyway. Old people these days, in my day we'll listen to the young people who provide us with customers service and treat them like human beings..."

I don't care what you think because you're not listening to what I say. Fair trade, isn't it ?

Finally an SC got something right!

Once when I worked at a Blockbuster (it was a franchise and our owner was cool so we could get away with quite a bit) a man and his daughter came in to rent a movie. They were incensed they had a late fee! They didn't drop the movie off late it was the store's fault etc etc. if they didn't need this movie for the girl's class (?) they wouldn't ever come back etc.

I heard things like this at least 5 times a day so I didn't respond while he whined, just checked him out like normal. When the transaction was finished I handed him the DVD and he snatched it, snarling, "Fine, I know YOU don't care!"

My response (I might not have said it if I had time to think of it, but looking back I am glad I did), "You're absolutely right, sir. Have a good night."

Should we care about assholes we don't know? Would they care about us? I think not.
Excuse me, good sir paladin, can you direct me to your EVIL district?

Just a thought? Maybe we should start telling them our life stories as well... including all those bizarre bumps on our ass cheeks?
"Do you care about my life, sir?"
            "Ick! No!"
            "Now we're even."
            "I call murder on that!"

              That is GREAT!!!

I have got to remember that one!

(No, I wouldn't have the nerve to actually say it, but I'll remember it anyway! )
“Excuse me. Is this bracelet real jade?”
“Ma’am, this is a thrift shop. The tag on the bracelet says $1.50. It comes with a matching mood ring. What do you think?”
              “I don’t know.”
              “Yes, it’s real.”

You know, diesel does take less effort to make than regular gas, but i would think that there is a much higher demand for diesel, with all the big rig semi trucks and such using it....and doesnt higher demand equal higher price? I could be wrong, but it makes sense to me.
"What size can I get you, ma'am?"
                "Red."
"Okay...I'll check the red for you, but what size do you need?"
                "RED!"
                "..."

Refining costs aren't a big enough percentage of the cost of fuel for them to make much of a difference. The cost of the crude to make diesel is the same as it is for gasoline and that's about 80% of the cost of the fuel. But explaining economics to a customer doesn't work.
