  • Wierd scammer I've never seen

Once, a couple of years ago, I come in to work and one of my co workers tells me that some guy pulled a book about tractors off the shelf and claimed he bought it and left it there. Now, we keep written records of every sale, not that detailed, just subject and price. She checked the sheet for the day he claimed he bought the book and there was no corosponding entry. She told him to come back when the owner was in. He never returned.

FF to the present. I come in to work and on the desk is the same tractor book with a sticky telling the same story from a new girl. I threw away the sticky and reshelved the book. The following day I saw her and told her that he is a scammer.

I'm semi-management (meaning I make judgement calls on policy I don't make - very frustrating). I get a call at home from the other newbie telling me that a guy is trying the same thing. I tell him I'll be right over. I start the trek to work, I leave my appartment, cross the street, cross the parking lot, cross the alley and enter the back door. When I talk get to the counter I'm told that the guy left and said that he would be back in five minutes. I wait 20 and he never shows.

For the amount of time he's spent trying to scam this book he could have flipped burgers and bought two copies.

I'm really frustrated that I've never seen the guy.

Maybe he's a new kind of pervert who thinks the tractors are sexy and too embarassed to actually buy the book. Or maybe he's thinking that someone will actually buy the book and he'll come in one day and you guys will see it on your records and say, "Oh, here it is!" and give it to him.
