I once rang up a woman who was rather unremarkable as a customer, until after I handed her her change and she said "Thank you." I hadn't even given her the bag yet and was still sorting her cash, so I didn't respond right away. She waited about a second and a half before saying, in her best talking-to-a-five-year-old voice, "Now you say 'You're welcome.'" I put her bag up on the counter and said, in a perfectly flat voice, "You're welcome" and she walked off. Bitch. First of all, I am an adult (late twenties at the time) and a complete stranger; don't speak to me like I'm your child. Second, you can see I'm still sorting out your transaction; give me 2 seconds to respond before giving me a "lesson" on manners. (Though I did learn how not to respond when someone doesn't say You're Welcome in the proper time frame, which is evidently 1.5 seconds. For future reference.)
