  • Back with a couple stories

I've been away for a couple of months actually letting my brain recharge and generally enjoying the post graduation euphoria of getting a B.S. in Physics.

As a refresher I work as a TA for astronomy lab and then in the school library (usually shelving books or helping out at the reference desk).

Okay without any ado let's get down to business.

    Story 1

First lab of the summer session. The professor I work for is a pretty funny guy and can usually get the students laughing within 20 min on the first day. Not these kids.

Anyway. The lab was using star charts to find various things. Not a hard task. The professor left to his office to work on some research. One of the students was about 5 questions from finishing and announced to the class that she would be finishing in 5 minutes in a rather annoying and self-righteous tone. Well 2 minutes later she was asking for my help (i.e. her wanting to give me the answers to her). I slowly head her way while helping other students with their questions. I make sure to take a good 4 minutes to make my way to her chair. She said something along the line of how I now have made her a liar and that it'll take longer for her to get finished (others were now finishing in front of her). I replied that, "If you didn't make that self-righteous comment at the start, I wouldn't have taken my time to get to you. Humility goes a lot farther in life than self-righteousness." She has since become one of my best students in lab.

    Story 2

This happened as I was walking from library work around 9pm the other day. There is a pizza place right across from a sub-shop. I go in and place my order with the owner of the pizza shop. There is one other customer in the store. I notice that they are selling oven-toasted sandwiches. I ask about them and how they are selling. I make a comment about how it must be hard selling the subs right across from the sub shop. The owner says, "It's not that hard. I think they're better than XXXX."

At this point the other customer gets pissed. He says, "Dude. WTF?!?! How dare you say something like that. I'm the owner of XXXX. We do business with you guys all the time. Cancel my order. I'm not gonna buy from you guys ever again." The sub shop owner leaves and the pizza shop owner calls him an A-hole right as the door shuts. I start laughing. So does the owner and the employee.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

For the second story, the owner of XXXX buys this pizza guys subs and resells them? Or just doesn't like his own subs and buys the pizza shop subs? First story is a gem, hee. At least no one will cheat off of the liar though.

The pizza place is franchise of a national chain that just started selling their own versions of the oven-toasted subs to try and compete with XXXX, which is also a national chain. It just so happens that they right across the street from one another.

So I guess the guy from xxxx was in the shop to buy pizza? Still kind of funny. At least the owner of the pizza place didn't try to placate the sub owner with an offer of a free pizza.

So what's with the secrecy on the chain names? I'm pretty sure I know the name of the pizza chain, but I'm curious about the subs.

Why not? Looking at the same food over and over again will drive a person to go elsewhere for a meal, instead of dealing with what they've been working with all day.

Sorry. It's a force of habit when talking to other people. The pizza place is Dominoes and the sub place is Quizno's.

I was first thinking that the sub guy went to buy some competetor's sub (maybe to reverse engineer it?) then I thought, duh, be probably just went to get a pizza. I tend to think too hard.

                  Someone that understands!
I get people who work in other departments that look at me funny every time I tell them I never eat food from the deli. I look at it 40 hours a week, I DONT want to eat it, or anything that resembles it after 4 years. >.>

All my students know that I treat them like they treat me. It also helps that I can kick them out of lab and if they miss enough labs they fail lab and in turn fail the class.

Huh. I thought you were talking about Pizza Hut and Quizno's. PH has had toasted sandwiches since like around January... of course, when has Dominoes done anything first, or better?

oh I understand the people who want to eat anywhere other than where they work... even if it is the EXACT SAME THING... when I used to work for Carl's Jr. there were times when on my lunch break I'd walk across the shopping center and eat at Jack in the Box, simply because it wasn't Carl's Jr. (though I did also go to Quizznos and KFC occasionally, but that doesn't prove my point as well).
