    The Sad Decline of Common Sense

    A very simple story follows...a quick but humorous reminder that the world is bleeding common sense by the gallon.

    SC: Brings a box containing 48 individual boxes of crayons (24 ct. boxes) to one of my checkouts

    CoW: Starts ringing up the boxes of crayons

    SC: Uhh...how much are those ringing up for??

    CoW: They are originally $1.45 but they are on sale for 69 cents.

    SC: But the box says $1.45 for 24.

    CoW: Yes they are originally $1.45 per box but they are on sale.

    SC: No the whole thing (48 boxes of crayons with 24 crayons per box) should be $2.90 if they are $1.45 for 24.

    CoW: No the price is per individual box...

    SC: Well I don't want them then...I can get them cheaper at Wal-Mart. *says this with major attitude*

    We proceed to laugh hysterically about that fact that she thought she was going to get 48 boxes of crayons for 6 cents each!!!

    Sad, isn't it?

    I hate people like that, and I don't even work in retail.

      MY brain just lept out of my ear, landed on the floor with a resounding "spluck" and is now running around yelping like a puppy that just put it's tail under Granny's rocking chair.

      We need a smily for that.

        I'm holding my hand to my ears and typing with my elbows so my brain doesn't do the same thing.

        Ah...gotta love selective reading. Why do SC's have that ability?

          Another customer who's the wrong kind of special.

          And now I get to go into work in a little while and have to struggle through my shift with my brain gravely wounded by stupid. Awesome.

            SC really does have a point. And I have known some stores to have BTS specials that seem pretty ridiculous, but are correct, so 6 cents for a box of crayons is not necessarily unheard of. But I'm sure there would be some pretty strict limits on those.
            Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

              A customer came up to me yesterday with a big basket full of floral bushes (bunches, whatever). She says, "The sign for this said $1.99, but the tag on it says 454--which one's right?" I blinked, and stated the following, " The red tag on there is from the inventory service; we just did our inventory yesterday, and the number on the tag is probably a zone number or something (by the way, the tags look like post-it-notes with the numbers written on them in pen... nothing like a normal looking price tag with decimal points and dollar signs). The basket you have here is actually a fixture of ours, and is not for sale. The items in the basket, though, are for sale--although individually. It's not $1.99 for all of the bushes you have there."

                Good! With the lead and cadmium poisoning, your children can aspire to be as stupid as you when they grow up!
                Suckiness is reinforced up OR down at every transaction. Accepting BS makes them worse for all of us; firm fairness trains them to suck less.

                  Indeed. The cheap crayons just feel wrong, tend to feel slimy, have an unpleasant smell...

                  Crayola is the only one I would trust to give children. At least when I find rainbow-colored poop in my kid's diaper I know that he'll be fine.

                      Just a bit of Devil's Advocate here, but... our Wally World is selling Crayola 24 ct. boxes right now for $0.19... so, her rationale isn't totally whacked. I just about crapped my pants when I saw all of their "Back To School" prices.

                        LOL thanks for all the hilarious comments! In a way, I do see were she was coming from but then that is why I titled this post as a common sense thing...her common sense should have kicked in and made her realize that if it looks too good to be true...it probably is.
