Guest: yea Dave, I got my confirmation and calculated the tax in excel and it seems you overcharged me $2

Me: ok did you want me to adjust your balance?

Guest: no, I want us to be on the same page.

( so I look at the reservations pretending to recalculate everything)

Me: you're right sir, it seems we did overcharge you and so I will fix it for you

Guest: ok so give me a breakdown of the calculations

    (I tell him)

Guest: ok I guess that sounds ok

    Did he call back? Yes

Guest: yea Dave, I am looking at the email you sent of my statement and I recalculated this and it looks like I am shoring you guys 73 cents

Me: well dont worry about that

Guest: well I just want it to be right

    Me: sir, it's 73 cents

Guest: well can you research this and get back to me. I dont feel right shortchanging you all.

Also, WTF, it was $2. I bet after he pays the $.73 he will do the calculations again and realize you owe him $435

As odd and or annoying as it sounds I can understand. Perhaps he believes strongly in Karma or maybe he is just OCD.

If he can deal with accounting, not a big deal in my book.

I read an article on Bob Newhart, he was an accountant before he became a comic.

Anywho, he was talking to his boss and says, "I don't think I'm cut out for accounting, I mean why should you pay for 4 hours @ $6.00 an hour to find an 84 cent error?"

I have come to the conclusion that the higher I cliimb in the corporate world, the more stupid the people actually are.

Oh, that is just beautiful. I had a CFO who had me make sure the bank statements reconciled _exactly_. She would not adjust for even 5 cents. I was of the opinion that she should adjust all the way up to $20. I'm using that line next time I have a situation like that.

A couple years back, my dad got overcharged 13 cents on his taxes. It cost them about 35 cents to mail the letter to notify him.

Given where Vacation_Rentals_Suck works, it's likely to be a $0.73 difference on a $10,000 total. So I'm betting OCD.

An offsite link, but this reminded me of an article posted elsewhere a couple of months ago. It's regarding bills being sent out that were for balances smaller than the cost of postage to send them out. After reading some of the comments in this thread I thought you guys might enjoy it (and if you're really bored you can click All Comments on that site too).

Compared to the jerks we normally see in your posts, it's kinda nice to see that at least some of your customers are actually polite to you and honest - even if it's not in his favor.

Somehow I don't think it's OCD, just honesty.

That's funny. I overpaid 9 cents on my student loans and I asked, out of curiosity, what happens to the 9 cents and they said it just gets written off. Under a certain amount either way they just ignore it. (Then again, it was in their favor....)
