I graduated from college in 1996. I remembered how primative our school email accounts were.
Winsock dialer, then getting into the PINE mail system... those were the days

Now I'm back in school, and I can't believe how easy it is to contact people and find information for my classes. Hell, they have the NOTES for most classes up on the BlackBoard site - and most of the instructors expect students to print off said notes before class and read along. (I still write my notes out by hand though- kinesthetic learner)

Our campus bookstore website sucks, though. The people IN the store are very nice, but the booklist on the site is incomplete...

What I hate is that now students EXPECT to have instant access to their grades OMGNOOOOWWWW. I've debated using it for my classes, but decided, y'know, the grading system is pretty well explained....they can keep up with it themselves.

I had to post stuff to Blackboard for professors at the business school, and it was just a clusterf*ck. GAH. Of course, I have to use it for one of the classes I'm taking. *grumble, grumble*

$182 is quite normal for a chemistry book package.
At my school, that is so true. Unfortunately, the one chemistry book I needed semester (and incidentally the ONLY book for this semester) was not part of a package..and the school wanted $287 for it new. So I promptly got it new for $130 online..(take THAT, school!)

              $287 for ONE book??

Something is VERY wrong at your school, my friend. We have a chemistry book here that's $182, but that's because it's a brand spanking new edition just put out last month and it's the size of two dictionaries combined. Even with the markup we do, (Which honestly, isn't much, our store only marks up 25% at the most, even if we get a bookstore discount. We try to pass on savings where we can)

for a book to be $287, even at the standard bookstore discount of 20% with various vendors, they'd HAVE to be marking up that single book at LEAST by 60%, probably closer to 75%.

              I'm just saying...

Oh, blackboard. Someone at the library thought it would be a good idea for us to use blackboard to answer questions to familiarize ourselves with the databases.
Famous last words were "It will only take 30 min. a month to answer the questions." A lot of double fingers were given in the direction of the database people (the ones who order the diff. databases). But by itself I didn't think blackboard was a bad thing.
Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

I liked blackboard when I was in school.

Then I transferred to another school and they didn't use it. Which may explain why they didn't have many online classes, and why I found myself driving down there (25-40 miles depending on the campus) to find a note on the door that class was cancelled.
