the the OP-if you're in a computer repair shop(which it sounds like you are) didn't she notice that you more than likely have about 5 monitors back there? what did she think they were for?

I'd love to have a boss like that, but I've often gone to work on a day off anyway because they were busy and needed extra help.

Oh God. I would get that all the time.

I'm doing a reload or a virus scan and the customer comes back and sees me working on another customer's computer. Holy Hell will ensue.

I got so pissed off I brought the customer closer to the computer doing the virus scan and let them see the elapsed time of three hours and the estimated time remaining of two hours and asked him "If you were the customer that owned one of these other computers, and had to wait because I was standing here with my thumb up my ass for 5 hours waiting to finish this computer first...how would feel? How pissed off would you be?" I then pointed out that in the five hours I can upgrade the memory of this computer in 15 minutes, install a DVD burner in this one in 30, build a new machine and get it started on it's installation in just under an hour...all while his machine is getting screened for viruses"

I somehow lucked out. This guy was manager and understood time management and priorities. He was just in a hurry to get his computer back (aren't they all?) and apologized.

While winding down as a computer consultant/tech I dealt almost exclusively with malware removal. Because of scan times I turned from house calls to drop offs. Every once in a while someone would wonder why I was cheaper than the Geek Squad, and I would take them to my office and show them the line of computers (like theirs) all running through multi-hour processes. I'd tell them, "Because I'm not charging you for the nine hours these scans take. I'm only charging you for pushing some buttons every two hours."
