Anyone I've known who was a Ph.D. candidate in the biological sciences didn't pay to go to graduate school. They receive tuition and also a stipend to help with living expenses.

Same in the liberal arts. There's a couple of Ph.D.'s here with no GTA/GRA, but they're pretty rare.

Lemme put it this way - I wouldn't be getting the degree unless all the expenses were covered and I had a TA position. Ph.D.'s take too damn long (average here is 5 1/2 years) to get by on student loans.
