I have people walk up to the desk to check in for their appointments while blabbing away on their phones. Keep in mind, by the time they've gotten to the desk, they've passed "No Cell Phones" signs on the front door, the vestibule door to enter the spa itself, and one 8 1/2x11 sign at each receptionist's station, which, at that point, is DIRECTLY in front of their face. We ignore them, continuing to go about our business until they're done. Sometimes, they'll do the cover-the-mouthpiece thing and say, "I'd like to check in, please" usually sounding annoyed and huffy that they haven't been acknowledged yet. We always respond that we'll be happy to help them once they've finished their call and point to the sign directly in front of their face.
The pervasiveness of cell phones is scary. We have signs everywhere (which, I know, SCs don't read signs), and we ask people to take their cell phone conversations outside if they're using them in reception, and ask them to turn it off or set it to silent if a staff member sees them using it during a service. There's always some VERY important reason why a SC is exempt from the rule- waiting to hear from kid's school, in the middle of a family emergency, or my personal favorite, has to participate in a conference call. Um, why would you schedule a spa appointment if you are supposed to be working or are in a family emergency or have a sick kid? If it's so important that you need to have your phone glued to you, it's important enough to cancel your appointment.
I do love ignoring them until they're off the phone. They never seem to get it, and if they say anything, I always say that I didn't want to interrupt what had to have been a very important conversation.
