  • 17th and 18th Pet Peeve

So by now all of you are thinking why does this guy work where he does if he is bothered so much.... Well because all I ask is you do what you are supposed to at check out. Remove Items from the cart and put them on the belt. I check them out with a friendly attitude you pay and you go on your way.

No need for other interaction, I am there to do my job and go home.

Anyway pet peeves #17 and #18

17 - Customers who are disrespectful of others still putting items on the belt. - I really hate it when I'M checking out a customer and they are still in the process of putting items up on the belt and some SSSC. has the gonads to come right up behind the customer I am helping and starts to put their items up on the belt. Causing the current customer to have to hand me each item because the idiot behind them didn't want to wait their turn inline. Either that or wants to stand right up on the person in front of them. I hate it!

18 - Customers that choose not to buy an item because its dented, box is slit ect - If you picked up a box that had a slit in it and didn't see it hey that may be a good possibility but seriously if the box is cut and the contents are sealed inside the box what difference does it make? The food will still taste the same, no product is infected. Dented cans? Why oh why do people insist they get a discount off of them or choose they dont want the product? You know when an item is dented and can't avoid seeing an item dented, now all of a sudden you don't want the product or you want to go get another? Hell I'll buy what you don't want it will taste the same dented or not.

The dented can thing actually makes sense - I was under the impression that dented cans were automatically pulled off the shelf and returned, because the dent can cause...something. I don't remember what, but I want to say it has something to do with increased possibility of bacteria getting in?

My sister worked as a bagger/cashier for a large Northeastern supermarket chain one year. I'll have to ask her about the dented can thing, as it might just be one of those things you learn as a kid, but may not be right.

cans that bulge typically signify the presence of botulism within but i'm not sure if that applies to dented cans

My mom wouldn't let us kids eat from the dented cans ... she'd say, "don't you eat from those cans, I'm saving them for your dad." Yeah, they split up.

Even my gf won't let us eat from dented cans, so there must be a valid reason. Lemme check ...

        This is from http://www.fpa-food.org/content/consumers/faqs.asp

Q: Is it safe to use dented cans?
A: Products in slightly dented cans can be consumed as long as there are no leaks and the product appears wholesome. Do not consume products from severely dented, leaking, or swollen cans or jars.

The thing you are thinking of is Botulism....ie what 90% of the RSC's shoot up into their face...most toxic thing known to man is a wrinkle treatment.

The reason why Botulinum toxin is a beuty treatment, is because it's a nerve agent - it kills the nerves, making that part of the face go slack and therefore not have any wrinkles in it.

              Yes, it's disgusting.

As for dented cans... tins used to be made out of tin (for strength) with a plain metal plating on top (because tin should not get into food). A dented can could have broken the plating on the inside, leaving you with tin-contaminated food (bad).

But these days tins are made out of aluminium or stainless steel, since making these metals became easier than mining tin - and have the added benefit of not automatically toxifying any food they touch. A modern can is just fine as long as the seal is good.

A bloated can is bad, because it implies that while the seal is good, the food inside is not. If there's enough pressure inside to make it visibly bulge, it's been off for some time already.

Fun factoid: explorers came across a camp and cache from one of the original South Pole expeditions, when they went to set up the present South Pole research base. It contained a good deal of tinned food, which thanks to the extreme and unrelenting cold of the Antarctic, was still edible after the intervening decades.

Dented cans are pulled off the shelves because customers won't buy them. The food inside is still perfectly edible (assuming the can isn't punctured), but because the can is no longer pretty, customers won't buy it, and thus it will sit on the shelf forever. Its purely a cosmetic issue caused by picky customers who want everything to be absolutely pristine.

am I wrong in that if the dent is bad enough depending on the contents it actually may be damaged inside such as a severe dent where the can is close to having a hole. Some of the contents may be ruined. Or the pressure built up because the contents were squished further because of the dent that it may explode or gush upon opening? At least thats why my mother taught me so unless its horribly dented i still buy it...and be careful when opening heh

Dented cans are fine 99% of the time. I remember we used to have a store nearby that all they sold was dented or otherwise damaged packaged foods. It was usually much cheaper than going to the regular supermarket as they basically bought the stuff in bulk from the regular market for nickels on the dollar. The possibility is there that the seal on the can has been compromised but as long as you actually look at it before trying to cook or consume it you are usually fine. And as has already been said NEVER buy swollen cans.

Yeah, I won't buy dented cans. If I can get a non-dented can for the same price....then why would I?

So you actually keep the can and stare at it after you open it. I know you pay for the packaging and all but come on. You don't value the can, you value whats in it. Thats crazy. I'd be willing to bet that very same can you value so much, you don't recycle and get every penny out of the sweet thing.

Look at it this way. You have a dented can and a non-dented can. They are the same price. There is a 0.000001% chance that something could be wrong with the dented can. Therefore, I put the dented can back on the shelf and pay for the one that didn't get damaged in the shipping process.

And I DO recycle, since you were wondering.

Why avoid dented cans? Because one doesn't want to be the one-in-ten-thousand who gets really, violently sick.
