*snerks* I have a feeling...a strange mind you that is why my neighbors garage motion light doesn't seem to work when I have it switched off.

Well then, I won't turn off the main switch...just all the others...specially that one that I have no clue what it is actaully hooked too.
Okay, so you're the one who's been out in my office messing with the switches on the power box.

And here I thought it was because we'd plugged one of the space heaters in my room to finish drying the shelves that had been painted while my brother was running the one in the living room . . .

Luckily half the outlets in my office are on a different switch (they have their OWN switch) so I can have heat out there.

Um, why do you unplug them? If they're not on, they're not exactly using electricity, plugged or not.
It's a matter of speaking; or rather, thoughts not transferring on to screen. -__- I switch them off at the mains, not unplug them.

Um... if that's not a joke, you may want to do some experimenting. Something illegal may have taken place when the power was placed. Your neighbors may or may not know about it. (Yes, I am familiar with one occasion where someone had run power feeds to a different house.)

I think it is a mistake but as my landlord won't even properly fix a sink hole in my backyard I don't think she would do anything about this. Hell my wiring is so old it has the original cotton wrapping.

For now, the switches that I don't use on a daily bases are going to be shut off. I already have my thermostat lowered down and am just waiting to see if that will help my cost go down. Not my fault if their light doesn't work.

The place I live in now is a really nice place, individually metered, so we had to have all the utilities hooked up. We usually try to keep the furnace at a low temp - around 16-19C during the day while we`re not here, or sleeping, etc. We both have space heaters and I think the longest I`ve run one so far this year is two hours. I like to have it at least semi-warm when i come out of a shower LOL

I used to live in this house with these people... worst roommates ever. I actually had to disable the thermostat because they kept jacking the temperature up to about 30C - which pushed the bill really high, and they weren`t the ones paying the utilities.

Oooh thats a rant all on it`s own!

I had roommates similar to that. I call them The Roaches.

Two of them, a boyfriend/girlfriend combo, shared a bedroom that was half a story up--we lived in a split level. Anyway, they would keep their windows open. While the air conditioning was running.

                In Phoenix.

Yeah. So they were upping everyone's electric bill, and we were none too happy about it. We kept telling them to knock it off. Then when rent would be due, they wouldn't have it, or wouldn't have all of it. Ditto with the bills that they helped run up.

Finally, I went to the landlord, told him what was up, and he backed me and the other roommate in what we did. We told these two that they had to get out. NOW. As in, all their shit out by the end of the night. And if they didn't, we WOULD put all their stuff outside for them to come collect. Period.

And you know what the chick did? Started arguing. About how she had no place to go. "Not our problem." About how she needed more time. "Not our problem." About how we couldn't put her stuff out as some of it was antique family heirlooms, the elements would ruin it, blah blah blah.

"Not our problem. You no longer live here, and your shit will be leaving. Immediately. End of story. And if you attempt to come into this house after your shit is removed, you will be charged with trespassing, and we and the landlord WILL prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law. Now, GET THE FUCK OUT!"

I never once raised my voice. One of my prouder moments. Fuckers. They still owe me $1,000 or so.

My Mom has one of those digital thermostats too. She loved it, saved us a lot of money living in TN.
The best part: the thermostat was no more difficult to install than a dimmer switch. With what service people in my neck of the woods typically charge, you either get handy or broke when you buy a house.

In my fraternity, we had an individual who kept upping the thermostat 'til the house was a sauna. Our house manager built a padlocked case around it. That stopped that nonsense.

Your company actually sounds generous compared to Florida Power and Light. They are the only electric company we have and because of that, nine times out of ten, it's "Pay up or we shut you off. We aren't here to make deals." This is literally the only utility company, next to water perhaps, where they don't have to worry about competition like the cable and phone companies do.
