JESUS [EXPLETIVE] CHRIST!!! (language)

So, I'm helping a customer in software when I suddenly hear a very loud

"JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!!!!!!"

coming from the registers, followed by one of our full-timers - very flustered - saying

"I'm sorry!"

I looked up and saw an irate SC charging over to the self-service fax machine at the copy center, under-10 year old daughter in tow. The full-timer and Professor X stood there watching the guy. Professor X seemed very indifferent towards the guy.

Lovely example he's setting. Throwing a tantrum in public, and using foul language.

When I got a free minute, I asked what the hell happened with that SC.

Apparently, he came in to fax a legal document (a medical release form) that required countersignatures by two witnesses. He asked the Copy Center Specialist to sign as a witness.

Of course, none of us know this guy from any other Joe Schmoe who walks in off the street, so he wasn't about to attach his name to a legal document, with all the potential legal repercussions, so he refused.

SC demanded he sign. CPCS told him to speak with Professor X.

Professor X, also unwilling to commit his name or any of his employees names to a legal document, told him the same thing.

Now the SC was really pissed and stomped over to the full-timer and demanded he sign it.

Professor X tells him not to sign the document, whereupon the guy yelled "JESUS FUCKING CHRIST" and went off to fax the thing anyway, either without witness signatures or possibly having forged them himself.

No question the guy was rude and out of line. But I don't get why 3 employees refused to just witness the document for the guy. Are you all not understanding what witnessing means? It just means you are witnessing his signature and then signing. That's all! It doesn't mean you have to know the guy or vouch for him or anything. All you are doing is verifying that the person in front of you signed the document in front of you. That's all! I just think it was rude of your staff to refuse to help him out. I'd probably be pretty upset if I were in his shoes. Of course it's no excuse to curse, but I can understand his frustration.

But in order to witness the signature legally, you have to be able to verify that the person signing is, indeed, the person who's supposed to sign, as I understand it, anyway. (IANAL).

Repercussions or not, I don't think the employees were out of line at all for refusing to sign a legal document.

If it were me, that's a whole potential bag of cats that I don't need to deal with or worry about.

I don't think the employees had any obligation to sign a legal document. They had no idea who he was, what he might have done, or why he needed two witnesses. There's no telling what might have happened.

Theres a reason why Noteries have to take classes and pay fee's and be registered and keep records. Its because of the liability issues, and the possiblity of the signature being called into question at a later date. If you don't know someone then why would you want to sign your john handcock (yup it made me laugh too) on the dotted line. You aren't getting paid a service fee for doing it. Why would you want to open yourself up for a liability issue.

I happen to be a notary public. There is a big difference between notarizing a document (something only a notary can do) and witnessing. Witnessing can be done by anybody and it just involves watching the person sign the form. That's IT!

Of course they're not under any obligation, but it certainly would have been the nice thing to do. I hope none of you are ever in a situation where you need a witness for a document and people refuse to help you.
