Even though I only buy alcohol in Illinois -- I still fear having to hand over my driver's license.... for those that don't know, Illinois had a neat little program of "renew license through mail if nothing changed (and some other stuff)", and if you did that, they gave you a big sticker to put on the back of the license that says "good for 4 years from date of expiry on the front of the card" (or something like that).

Anyway... I dread someone not knowing it (rare now probably) and me having to proove it. Or worse yet, when I'm asked for ID for something dumb in another state (I was once carded for a DVD purchase that was rated R -- and it seemed to take forever to prove that my license was valid, another time I was carded for razor blades...). I swore the person ringing me up was young enough I could've been their father, barely, but still.

But I never imagined that places would only accept a "same state" license for alcohol.

Now that Illinois has changed the look, next time you have to get renewed, you won't get a sticker, you'll get a new license so at least for a little bit with that you won't have to worry.

Well I checked and it is just company policy. Just the way they talk about it made it sound like law. Plus a lot of local businesses have similar policies. I guess I got confused. lol.
Oh no, I wasn't saying you were in the wrong in any way! And they probably do make it sound like a law, as if you are caught selling to someone underage there's major fines. I was just a little confused since I'm sure people from other states visit Texas and want to buy things that require proof of age. It would be very very stupid of Texas to create a law stating only their own IDs are valid for identification purposes.

But you are perfectly fine and great.

I was pulled over in a neighboring state once. My vehicle matched the desc. of a vehicle used in a armed robbery, that could have gone downhill quickly. My state issued tow different style licenses for under/over 21. Under 21 was printed vertically.

The cop didn't know thsi and though i had a fake DL, despite running the number and it coming back valid. Another cop finally showed and I was let go.

I got stopped on the main road near the police station, so every cop heading to or coming from felt the need to stop and assist the other officers. I end up being surrounded by 6-8 cruisers.

I might be here, but from http://www.tabc.state.tx.us/leginfo/ageVerify.htm

            State Law

Texas state law does not require that a person over 21 provide any identification to purchase alcohol in Texas. There is nothing in the law that declares specific forms of ID as “valid” for an alcohol purchase.

However, the law does provide a statutory defense to the charge of selling an alcoholic beverage to a minor when the seller has asked for and examined an apparently valid DPS issued Texas DL or ID card which contains a physical description consistent with the presenter's appearance and shows the presenter to be 21 years of age of older.

For that reason, since store clerks, wait staff, and bartenders can be held criminally liable for selling alcohol to a minor, they often require a Texas Driver's License or Texas Identification Card issued by the Department of Public Safety, to prove that the person really is 21.

A store, bar or restaurant might or might not sell alcohol to a person with an out-of-state driver's license, military ID, or passport. What's acceptable in any establishment is a matter of that establishment's private business policies.
If the patron is obviously over 21, the establishment may not require any ID at all.

Yeah I heard about that -- of course that makes me worry more as I don't have a "current" license that way

But I look old enough I doubt it'll really be an issue....

Off topic but a question. So what you are saying is that If I came into your store in Texas visiting from Washington State that if I wanted to buy alcohol, I wouldn't be able to? That muxt not do alot for tourism and the like.
that's what i was thinking... plus... even when i was stationed in another state, i kept my home state ID.

The cop didn't know thsi and though i had a fake DL,
Ok that guy was nuts!... who in their right mind would make a fake ID reading "UNDER 21"?

If you look under 27, I'm gonna card you. It's the law and I like having a paycheck. So if I card you don't give me the huff puff. See a couple of you I've carded almost laughed in my face and said "you serious?" Um yeah?! And when I look at your cards your birthyears are 1986 or 84! Your 22 to 24 year old and your asking me if I'm serious about carding you?
I asked someone if he was serious last time I got carded. The drinking age here is 18, and they're supposed to ID if you look under 25. Fair enough. But - I am 35.

                  Made my WEEK!

(The clerk laughed too. Said he wasn't often that far off!)

I had a guy come in with a very very fake ID that put him as under 21 and tried to use it to buy beer. He also waited while I hid with it in the office for 10 minutes, waiting for the cops to show up!

When they changed the Illinois license, the only reason our department found out before we got one is is because one of our officers happened to get hers renewed. It sucks The surrounding you thing was in case it was the actual vehicle in question. Better safe than sorry when it comes to someone possibly having a gun though you'd think they would have radioed in that they didn't need assistance.
