Sometimes 3x a year we get a bomb threat, sometimes 3 years past without a threat. Since the idiot called it in, I hope he was stupid enough to do it from home.
Good Morning,
This is to alert you to an incident that occurred at the Blue Library on Thursday evening and to provide you general information in the event that you receive questions.
At approximately 6:30 p.m., a male caller contacted Phone Reference stating that he had placed a bomb in or under the Blue Library. Staff contacted members of the Blue security staff and the HPD officer assigned to Blue, who called for additional officers. The building was evacuated and searched for anything out of the ordinary. Nothing suspicious was discovered, and the building was re-opened to the public at approximately 8:00 p.m. Additional HPD officers arrived and stayed in the building until closing to in the event of additional suspicious activity.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, please remember to follow HPL Procedure blah blah blah. You will notice that the very first step is to determine if HPD needs to be contacted, which staff at Blue did.
A note about HPD’s response to bomb threats: We are told that HPD’s standard response to such a situation is to ask for assistance from security or other staff with a search of the building. The reasoning is that an HPD officer will not be able to identify objects that are out of the ordinary. We are further told that staff members do not have to agree conducting the search. Please know, though, that in the event of another call, this is HPD’s normal and accepted approach.
