I still love where I work but this one came close to making me walk out. And thanks to an ineffective new manager, I may get fired anyway.
I took a call from this piece of...work. He had made a donation through our web site but he called us because he wasn't happy that the amount of his donation did not automatically appear on the certificate he chose to let his friends who he was sending it to, how much he gave. I started to explain that most people don't want the amount on it but he could put it in himself in the personalized message he enters. This wasn't good enough and he knows how it should be because he's worked for charities before.
Then he complained about the lack of the word "Christmas" on our cards and certificates. I started to explain that we don't use it because then we would have to make cards for the other holidays by name and it would mean fewer wishes granted for the kids because we would be spending a lot on having the cards made. He accused me of "arguing" with him and I said I was just expalining why we do what we do.
Then he complained about the design of one of our cards. It has pictures of reindeer and says "Reindeer Wishes" on it. He said it's a rediculous card. I told him it's one of the cards designed by one of our wish kids. What I didn't say was it's also our most popular card. Again he said I was arguing.
THEN he complained because he thinks our web site should allow him to add his friends to our mailing list because "they would donate a lot of money".
AGAIN I tried to explain to him why. That most people don't want us to solicite them without their permission. AGAIN he accused me of arguing.
By this time, I had had enough. I had a LOT of work he was keeping me from and he would not shut up. I was seeing red by now and I was on the verge of telling him to go fuck himself but I just slammed the phone down on him and cursed out loud, scaring a few people around me because I have NEVER lost it like that before.
Of course he calle dback less than a minute later and demanded my manager.
This is where the sucky new manager comes in. He is almost never in his office so this screaming pustule got his voicemail.
When the manager came back and listened to the vm, he asked me for my side and I gave it to him. He told me the message was long and that the guy demanded something be done asap or he would go all the way up the ladder to the top if he had to. My manager told me then that he would take care of it now to head that off. 6 hours later, I asked if he had called him yet and he said not yet. 2 DAYS LATER, I asked him again if he had called him and he still hadn't! He told me he decided to give the guy a "cooling off period"!
In my experience, guys like this don't cool off. They simmer and then boil over.
And if he gets through to the CEO, he may have no choice but to fire me.
Sorry fo rthe epic length but it felt good to take out my anger on the keyboard.
