If the jar has a metal or plastic lid to it, it should be possible to cut a slot in it that's big enough for coins (and notes if necessary), but keeps the contents of the jar visible. That would at least make it slightly harder to nick things from it. If it's a metal lid, make sure the edges point into the jar, so it doesn't cut anyone.

Better would be a proper "piggy bank" type box, ideal would be to have a lock on it (a cheap luggage lock would work).

My mom's one of the bar tenders at our local watering hole and I go over to help her clean up sometimes. We always have regulars in there and rarely ever see somebody we don't know.

*side note: we're a small, english-speaking town in Quebec*

One night, this french couple had come in with one of our regulars. The woman was already pretty trashed and kept ordering shots. At one point, I saw her whisper something to the guy she was with and then she reached over the bar, grabbed one of the tip cups and completely emptied it onto the bar. She started rooting through the change looking for some cash to pay for her next round

EVERYBODY in the bar turned and yelled at her to not touch the tip jar

Made me very proud of our regulars
