One of my most annoying regulars really aggravated me today

This woman comes in every Sunday and is one of my most demanding/irritating customers that I've had at this job (or any.) Today, however, really got to me. She says about 58734742869 times during the transaction to "not make the bags too heavy." She's old, and that's understandable if she has a ton of heavy stuff, or a ton of clothing, but I put like 5 articles of clothing in a big bag and she says "NOPE, that's too heavy. Give me another one." Seriously, she needed 2 big bags for 5 articles of clothing? The damn things didn't weigh more than a pound! But this wasn't even the most annoying. We have dollar sales every Sunday, with a sign that clearly says "Clothing and shoes ONLY." This does not include hats, scarves, purses, or bras (stuff that can be taxed, and clothing is not taxable in CT.) She brings up a hat with the dollar color tag on it, and I sigh (in my head) knowing that this would be a pain in the ass. I explained to her that hats were not included in our dollar sales because they are taxable items. She argues with me, saying "you are wrong. They are clothing because you wear them!" I had to explain that hats were taxable and she didn't understand this. She asked to speak to my manager. (I'd had to call her numerous times during the day for other issues, but that's neither here nor there.) I told the cust that I wasn't going to bother her with that question because I knew the answer she would give was the same as what I'd given her. As it turned out, I needed to give her a call anyways because I needed a price check on an item. While she was out there, of course the cust asked her the question. And not surprisingly, she got the same damn answer that I had given her. I still don't think she understood, but the rest of the transaction went smoothly.
This story may be in the wrong place as she's not technically an sc. Annoying, and demanding, but friendly.
I think there may be something wrong with her upstairs. But I am not in a position to offer a diagnosis on that. But anyways, where the hell has she been living? What place on earth doesn't charge tax on hats?
As an aside, when we were closing up, I clarified that transaction with my manager, and she pipes up with one of the best lines EVER. She says "By that woman's reasoning, wouldn't tampons and condoms be considered clothing, since you wear them?"

I HATED tax free week...I worked n a watch store, watched are NOT clothing, trying explaing that to people, lol The only good thing about TFW was the list of taxable/nontaxable items.....fencing uniforms were not taxable, lobster bids were (I might have those reversed)

I absolutely hate it when cashiers think I'm some weak little girl that can't lift very much, so they put only one or two items in every bag and I end up with 20 light bags in my trunk. But I also hate it when cashiers play "Let's see how many things we can fit in here!" and the bags tear.

I just miss the far away Wal-Mart with self checkouts. Then I can have it my way.

in the uk tax isn't charged seperately at the till, it is priced up on the products. If there is a sale, the sale price includes tax. There are different tax brackets for different things. Standard tax you'll see in the UK is V.A.T, which used to be 17.5% and recently, to try and increase consumer spending during a recession- went down to 15%. Things like childrens clothes, sanitary protection and some basic essential foods are V.A.T free, most things are charged with V.A.T except alcohol, which has a higher tax for the duty rate.

Just syaing, not everywhere taxes the same, and I, personally, would find a lot of american states confusing.

Clothing is taxed in California. Food, fresh, unprepared and some frozen foods are not. And that's about it. You pay tax at a restaurant on your food. Some snack foods are taxed, some aren't.

When I lived in Nevada, a long, long time ago, the sales tax rate was about 3%, but they taxed groceries. Then, they decided to make it easier on the poorer among us by not taxing groceries. They then raised the sales tax rate to 6%. Apparently, if you never had to buy clothes or books or anything other than groceries, you came out okay. Otherwise, it balanced out about the same, except if you had to buy a high-end item, like an appliance or a car, at which point the pain set in.

New Hampshire. No sales tax. I used to forget about the extra tax on things when I went shopping when I traveled, but I'm used to it now after going to an out of state college. But if there is tax, hats and things would be considered accessories, not clothing.

I agree that our sales tax is confusing. Oregon has no sales tax. They've tried many times to start one up, but it never passes. Personally, I will not vote yes on a sales tax until they start doing it the way they do here in Europe: including the tax in the price.
