  • Mr. Dips: Ruiner of Christmas?

Well, it was bound to happen. A member of the Dips family finally managed to ruin someone's Christmas.

A man called the coin shop today, Christmas Eve. Mr. Dips answered the phone.

The caller started asking about prices on various coins in their catalog. Mr. Dips became puzzled because the prices the guy was giving him didn't match what he had.

Finally he asked the guy when he received the catalog that he kept referring to.

It turns out it was 1999.

Mr. Dips explained that was a very old catalog and the prices have gone up since 1999. Then he told the man the current prices.

The man became angry and told Mr. Dips, "I guess I can't afford to buy presents for my kids! Thanks a lot!" <click>

OK. He didn't specifically use the words "you ruined Christmas." So does it still count?

The stupid is strong with this one.

So wait, this guy was looking to buy coins as a present for his kids? I hope he was the type who still refers to his adult children as the kids, otherwise I don't think they'd be very appreciative.

Dips! I've missed you and your stories!

Hopefully that means your customers are being nice.

That being said, yay for Mr. Dips. Why the heck would someone expect prices NOT to change in almost TEN FREAKIN YEARS?!?

Also, do children really want things a coin shop would sell for Christmas? Unless he was planning to sell said coins TO the shop so he could get Christmas for his kids?

That guys an idiot. I'm sorry Mr. Dips had to deal with him.

I think Mr. Dips gets double points for ruining Christmas because you managed to do it on Christmas Eve, to a last-minute shopper (or potentially a last minute one, since we didn't quite get to the point).

Another question here: why not skip the step of buying the coins to sell and just buy what the kids want outright? Seems simpler to me.

Slightly off topic, but that was me wondering if maybe he was inquiring about prices so he would know what they would pay him if he had the coins to sell them.

I know, I know, trying to put logic on an SC. Bad Persephone!

Partial credit: he didn't get the immortal line or a torrent of abuse for anything that wasn't his fault, but the thought was there. The fact it's Christmas Eve also makes me want to give credit out.

                It's the thought that counts

That was my initial thought; with the inflation between 1999 and now he'd likely get a better deal than the old catalog's listed prices. ...But of course that would make too much sense in SC World.

So, then, wouldn't he want the more accurate, and possibly highly inflated current selling/buying price? He'd probably make more by selling them at today's rates...

Like I said -- I was trying to give logic to an SC. It doesn't work. He fails!

I know I was a weird kid, but heck yeah!

I've been collecting coins as long as I can remember. The only requirement is that I won't buy from a dealer. (Sorry, Mr. Dips! )

Most of my collection has come in change I've received, or in monies I've taken in while working as a cashier, then bought out of the till. A little bit, I've bought from friends.

I'm currently actively collecting pre-1982 pennies, "funky" nickels, and in 2009 there are supposed to be a few versions of Lincoln History pennies coming out, so I'll save those, too. I'll also save any other oddities/old stuff I come across.

The best coins came in when I worked the money room for a vending machine company in the '80s. One of the routes was to a now defunct Air Force Base, and the guys would bring back foreign coins from TDY (temporary duty) and then drop them in our machines. The old technology recognized only proper size/weight, not composition of coins. We never got enough to make it worthwhile to exchange at a bank, so the bosses told me to pitch the foreign coins. I asked if I could keep them, and they ok'd it.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

I'll remember that! I'm always finding "oddity" coins that really aren't worth anything, but are kinda cool. I'll start a Primer collection -- maybe I'll send em to you for your birthday or Christmas!

Also, I'm near a military base and my family travels a lot so I have a small collection of foreign coins that really aren't worth much but are cool. Want em?
