and I was allowed to tell the SC exactly what I thought of him without fear of reprisal.
So, I clock out at about 7:15 this morning, walk over to the breakfast area, start making toast (which yeah... technically I'm not supposed to take food, but oh well). While I'm waiting the morning person calls me over, wants to know how many rooms we can block off for GK's company for distressed passengers (Oh God, Gravekeeper, please don't send us as many tonight as last night )... oh, and yes, she does have to ask me this, because even though I'm off the clock, if I'm in the building and I'm the most senior person, I'm still the MOD by default (hell, I don't even have to be in the building... I can be comfortably at home and if no one with more seniority/higher managerial authority answers their phone I'm MOD by default, this is why I'm one of the higher paid employees). Anyway, back to the story, I walk over to let her know how many rooms I'll let be blocked off for distressed passengers. I come back to the breakfast area right in time to see some douche of a man taking my toast.
Me- sir, what are you doing?
SC- I'm taking this toast.
Me- you mean you're taking MY toast... if you want some you can make your own, breads right there in front of you.
SC- well, I don't have time to wait, just make some more.
Me- no... your time is no more valuable than mine... poor planning on your part is not an emergency on mine... after all, what would you have done if there wasn't an employee or other guest for you to steal from. (i should note, smiley is not happy in the morning when he's had a busy night and hasn't had a chance to raid the kitchen).
SC- how dare you say I'm stealing...
Me- yes, how dare I... despite the fact that you are stealing my time and would have been willing to steal another guest's time... now let me have my toast so I can get on with my mroning.
SC- your being extremely rude... I want to speak to the manager.
Me- (to my coworker) Hey (name), go clock me back in, this guest needs a manager.
Me- (to the SC) Alright, as soon as she gets back from clocking me in you will be speaking to the manager on duty.
SC- I want to speak to a real manager.
Me- well, I'm what you'll get... the assistant manager is at our other hotel right now and cannot be disturbed, the general manager did not get to sleep until 2am and is not a morning person... he'll probably ask you why the hell you woke him for something so trivial... the owner did not get to sleep until 4am and is also not a morning person... he will use much stronger words with you... I will tell you that you are extremely rude but apologize for my lack of professionalism... which option do you prefer?
SC- none... this shouldn't even be an issue... you work here so you shouldn't get to eat here anyway.
Me- (to coworker) Clock me back out.
Me- (to SC) ok, now I'm off the clock again... Go to hell. Just because I'm not some bigshot, whatever it is you do, doesn't mean that I don't deserve to eat. You have now crossed the line between being rude and being an uncaring jackass. Feel free to talk to the GM at a more reasonable hour if you feel I have been so unprofessional, his card is at the desk... but I know the first thing he will do is talk to (breakfast attendant) and (front desk employee) both of whom will side with me over you... all you will get out of it is an apology for the lack of professionalism and an empty promise to deal with me. (please note, this was said in a dead calm, quiet, non threatening in any way, voice).
the nice thing is, that my manager does know that my mantra is that "I will bend over backwards for a guest... I will not however bend over for them"... so he knows that pretty much any complaint he gets about me is from some jackass that crossed the line... this is especially helped when on the same day he will receive emails telling him how I went above and beyond for a guest.
