Trust me the large branch library's need them. I am a guard at the main branch located in the middle of downtown. Since it's winter we have homeless drunks who come in on a regular basis. These people are always drunk off of mouthwash, hair spray and what ever they can get there hands on. Unfortunately we don't have cops i our building it's just us. There are 4 of us but still it can get out of hand and the head of the library system who works out of the main branch is a huge pussy when it comes to barring them. I swear to god they have to kill someone to get barred and even when they do finally get barred they ignore it and trying to call the cops doesn't work because since picking up someone who's violating a barring notice is low priority it can be hours before they come and said person has usually left by the time they show up and we aren't allow to physically remove anybody unless they attack us or a staff member so it can be very frustrating dealing with them. I've worked there for 2 1/2 years and I'm seriously looking for another job because I swear i'm going to snap one of those a-holes necks soon
Oh, God, I know. For years we had assholes come in an treat us bad and no manager wants to deal with it.

For ex. there is this guy who is generally nice. But he wants to use the handicapped terminal all day, since it has a chair; the other terminals are standing terminals. People only get 30 min on it. If someone is on it, he will freak and bully the person. My co-workers ask the person who is on the computer to leave, just so they don't have to deal with this regular. Also, he figured out how to extend time. So one day he is on 3 hours and I go to the manger.

me: he's been on for 3 hours.
    manager: ok. *now looking constipated*
me: He's been extending his time. Can you tell him to get off the computer.
manager: looks like she's going for a root canal.

She goes to him and tell him he's been on for more than 30 min and he has to get up. But she is not happy with me.

And there is a sign saying that you have 30 min., if you are on longer than 30 min. the librarians can tell you to get off the computer.

Ok, time for the daily Cops! Library edition!

Bad boys, Bad boys, watcha gonna do when they come for you!

I watched Cops on TV maybe 10 times, and find it boring. But watching it live is so much Fun!

The poor cop had to take care of two! idiots.

First idiot was at the computer terminals. He was saying obscene things (the guard didnt' want to tell me what but I have the feeling the idiot was looking at youtube or something where there was a woman/women and was saying outloud "I want to fcuk that ass") and a woman next to him got offended and the cop pulled the guy away. When I got to my station at 5pm I see him in the entranceway handcuffed. So I had to call one of my co-workers to share. This co-worker is married, and one day she gets home and her husband says, "I never see you smile when you come home for work." And it's because she saw a tazering in the library. She told me it's sad that the only joy she gets from this job is when harm is being caused to the patrons.
In other words, me and her are sad people to get joy from the cops swinging into action.
Anyway, I called her to let her know. I was surprised she came down to see what was going on.
Anyway, the idiot was giving a ticket and let go. The guards retrieved from him 3 computer use cards and a library card. So he uses these to stay on the computers all day.

Second idiot was arrested about the same time. I don't know if he had to handcuff the second before he finished with the first or if it was one after the other. The second idiot was outside on the plaze, drunk, throwing beer bottles. His ass got sent to jail.

What kind of library is this, the library of the hood?

I've never seen anyone even be sucky in a library! Convenience sotres and shopping marts, sure, but libraries?

You'd be surprised. There was a story in today's paper about them hiring security at Chuck E. Cheese, of all places. Apparently a lot of fights have been breaking out over there.
I don't blame them. After what happened with Black Friday, it really seems like we need security everywhere. People are crazy now days.

The library I work in is in downtown. A lot of corporations, but also, the library is easy to get to by bus. And there are a lot of homeless shelters. And the Greyhound bus station is close.

So, new story; this is second hand info.

          Guy hits the woman cop.

On the third floor, this guy was looking over another man's shoulders while the man was on his laptop. So the laptop man goes to the rail in front of the third floor, which over looks the lobby and calls for a security guard.

The guard goes up, the guy is complaining that people are mean to him (this is the guy who is looking over people's shoulders) and the guard escorts him down to the lobby. I don't know how the cop got involved, maybe the guy was getting loud, but the guy hits the woman cop, in the face. One of the security guards then jumps on the guy and gets him on the ground.

          Guy goes to jail.

I'm expecting the cops won't show up for weeks, since the cops are only working on overtime at the library.

Okay, so I get that it is a public place, but you go to a library to check out books, not to spend time on the internet. I think your city needs to invest in a public internet shop or something.

I really think libraries should block youtube and other similiar websites. Computers in a library are usually there to research, right?

you'd think so eh? but nope pretty much i'd say 80% of the people there use the computer for e-mail, facebook(and other social sites) and Youtube. There is a stampede of people literally running to the elevators when we open just so they can be the first on the computers

Depending on the subject you're stufying Youtube is a legitimate site.
If I dropped everybody who occasionally said something stupid from my list of potential partners, I wouldn’t even be able to masturbate

The other library system in the area, the county library system, blocks facebook and other social networking sites. Though the one near my house is next to 5 schools, from elementary to H.S. I went there one afternoon and it was chaos. I might have wanted to work for the County, but at least here downtown we don't have many schools nearby. I can see YouTube used in research, but these homeless people arn't taking notes, so I doubt it is research for them.

Oh tell me about it. And people getting bitchy when there they can't find the newspaper. Well, we have 3 copies out and you got up stairs too late. Tough. Though people also take the papers to other floors, and we have to go looking for them.

Ok, I got more details about yesterday's altercation from a librarian who was watched from the 3rd floor. The guy was being lead out by the guard, and another guard grabbed hold of his backpack without permission, so the guy started to let his fists fly, and he didn't hit the cop, the 3 of them (the other guard, cop and guy) fell to the floor.
