  • "Why would you do that?"

For me, this is a short one.

The other day I was helping a woman with landline phones. I found her a phone she liked, and some 50 foot line cords so she could put the phone on the other side of her home office.

SC: OK, now I need some tacks....

Me: Oh, those are over in aisle 4 where it says "Tape & Fasteners."

SC:.....so I can run this along the baseboard and up and over the door.

Me: Oh, you need tacks to fasten down the phone cords?

    SC: Yes.

Me: Oh, well you need horseshoe brads for that, which you'd have to get at a hardware store.

SC: So they're not over there?

    Me: Sorry, no.

SC: But you just said they were, when they weren't. Why would you do that?!

OK, yeah, I jumped the gun a little and didn't wait for your full explanation. BUT once I got it, I corrected myself. It's not as if I sent you over there only for you to not find what you needed. You didn't have to move an inch. All that happened was we wasted about 5 seconds worth of conversation, yet you're acting as though I intentionally did you a disservice. I did no such thing, and I fail to see why this accusatory attitude is necessary.

Me: I'm sorry ma'am, I didn't realize at first what you needed them for.

    She left without buying anything.

      You're mean!

You just destroyed her faith in humanity, now she will belive that everyone she meets is going to lie to her, try to steal from her and abuse her.

      Give her a job application.

Why do I think she was planning to put the tacks THROUGH the cord to pin it down??

Oh god, I bet she was, too.

Because that's more than likely what she was going to do.

OMG! I had an almost identical customer today... except she wasn't sucky.

She wanted phone cord... got the 50 foot one and wanted staples to attach it to the wall with. I told her not to staples it and showed her what we did have (wasn't quite what she wanted, we don't have those brads either) and suggested double-stick tape if she didn't want to nail in the brads.

She actually thanked me a couple of times because she was planning on stapling the cord (which would have killed it).
