in NZ when that law was past they had to start painting big yellow squares around the doors of government buildings because the workers would stand IN the door ways and smoke

people will get used to it the longer it is a law in 25 years people will be so used to it that it wont be an issue anymore

Throwing a cigarette on the ground, just like any other object, would be littering. In some states, I believe, throwing lit cigarettes from cars has a much higher penalty, due the hazards of fires and injuring people in other cars.
God help someone if they get caught throwing a lit cigarette away during fireban season in AUS, that will not end well for them.

I had someone trow a cigarette butt out their window and it landed in my car, I dealt with it by catching up to them at the next set of lights and throwing my McDonalds cup in their window, ice and all.

I'm a smoker, but I don't understand why someone would feel the absolute dire NEED to have a cigarette while they spend 2-3 minutes tops in a store. I really don't get it. I may be hopelessly addicted, but I can go a few minutes without a cigg. For pete's sake.
I would love to see some of these "gotta chain smoke" people be required to take a LOOONNNNGGGGG international plane ride (ohhh about 18 hours or so point to point).

1 get to the airport 3 hour before departing time. (no smoking in the airport)
2 go through airline check in (nope no kisok checkin)
3 no smoking out in the arrival/departure area where there the car traffic is while waiting for the flight to be called
4 waiting in line to get through security checkpoint (oooopppssss no lighters or matches allowed past there
5 no smoking lounges in airport anymore (or at the very least few have them anymore
6 a hour to board and taxi
7 flight time and NO smoking on the plane. if you do you get arrested and fined and jailed
8 arrive at end point go through customs then get lugage again no smoking in the airport or outside

ohhhh that is about 21 or 23 hours at minimum see how they survive. I doubt they will bitch much after that
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

          No Smoking Reading Signs.

Proof that pepole do not read signs. Outside of the office building where I work they have made it very evident about no smoking in front of building. I daily walk by people standing by the stand and nicely comment " thank you for obeying the no smoking side to your right.

One lady answered but it is cold and I need a smoke. Kay so step 10 more feet to the left and smoke around the corner.

Oddly enough, somebody as recently found that a muscle-relaxant drug, in low doses, is very good at curing alcoholism. I wonder if it would work for other addictions too? I'm sure the researchers are wondering the same thing...

I'm not addicted; I just like to smoke. Before you all shriek "OMG, deluded much?" I have stopped smoking for a few weeks at a time before, for example cuz of being on holiday with nonsmoking friends. I also do not smoke every day, sometimes I go weeks without a smoke. I just like it.

Hah, the Smoking in Public Places Ban in PA is a joke. Whether you agree with it or not, it doesn't matter. The cops don't enforce it. I live on a college campus. A state school. It's considered a public place. Doesn't stop the smokers from lighting up at the entrances to all the buildings anyway, because they all know that none of the cops in PA will ticket them for it. Shouldn't make laws if you never plan on enforcing them.

Now, if I go home to NJ, you'll get fined in no time. Owners of bars and restaurants will kick you straight out for lighting up inside. They don't want to pay the fines.

Cops have better things to do than to throw someone in jail cause they're smoking where they're not supposed to.

Not all bars in PA have to abide by the non smoking law. If your food sales are less than 30% (or maybe 20%), you are not required to be non smoking.
Florida's law is somewhat like that. Actually, not a law, but a freakin' Constitutional Amendment! These people were serious about it, obviously. It bans smoking in public buildings and the workplace, and the original draft would have also banned smoking in all bars and restaurants, but the bar and restaurant association fought it tooth and nail and got some exceptions. To wit: Bars that don't serve food are exempt, as are open air bars/restaurants, as are bars whose food sales are 10% or less of their total sales. The Bar is both exempt and not exempt....the downstairs is not exempt, but the open air roof deck is, due to the lack of walls or a ceiling.

Many people are surprised to find out that I, a lifelong non-smoker, voted AGAINST said Amendment. I don't like cigarettes or smoking, but I voted against it because of personal and political beliefs I hold about what government should be able to tell private business regarding how they run their businesses. Yeah, I'm strange. I know.

And of course we get some real winners coming in. "Can I get an ashtry?" No. "Why not." Can't smoke in here. "But I saw people smoking in other bars!" Explain the law. "That's stupid." Agreement. Still the law.

So far the biggest smoking idiot was this dude who came in one day, walked right past the hostess without saying a word, into the bar area, as many people do. Once IN the bar area, he broke out a cigar that had not been visible when he walked in, and lit up. The bartender, of course, told him that he could not smoke in there, due to State law. That is when the dude went from being a typical uninformed tourist to being a Major Fucking Asshole.

"What? That's stupid. Someone should have told me that when I came in here!" And he stormed out.

That's right, kids. Apparently we should be having the hostess inform everyone that walks in the door, whether or not they are smoking or even have any smoking paraphernalia visible that they can't smoke in here.

                  Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigggghhhhhhttttt.......

To their credit, most people are pretty decent about it, and at least politely ask if they can smoke, and when told no, accept it. But the assholes, boy, do they make this shit fun!

                  Still A Customer."

Do people not read the paper? Watch TV? Listen to the radio?
Only the funnies, nope, and not since I moved back to the mountains where I can only get country music on the radio.

When they banned smoking in restaurants and bars in my state (and now the two neighboring states as well), there was a huge uproar from the business owners that their sales would drop, their businesses would suffer, etc. It seems that the opposite has happened. Non-smokers are more likely to go out, and stay out, knowing that they won't have to come home reeking of cigarette smoke. Smokers seem to have developed a quick adjustment to running outside for a butt, even in extreme weather. I haven't seen much of anyone trying to light up in a bar or restaurant in quite some time. I think if anyone tried, they'd get the immediate "duh" face from a whole bar full of patrons. Oddly, the open-air deck bar nearby is not exempt, you actually have to step off of the deck (back into the parking lot) to smoke. And the cops definitely enforce it around here.

The restaurant where I used to work was 100% non-smoking. One day I had a table of 4 guys, one lit up a cigarette. I walked over to the table and told the guy, "sorry, but you'll have to put that out or go outside to finish it, this is a non-smoking restaurant." He just looked at me, then put his hand with the cigarette under the table. I said, "no, really you cannot smoke in here." He grudgingly got up and went outside. Idiot.
