I miss my 98SE system. The laptop technically still works... if you hook up a monitor, mouse and keyboard. Seems it didn't like getting knocked off the desk by my friend's roommate. I keep it for the games and one program I have that just will *not* run on XP.

Software-wise I don't have too many problems, but I was a bit upset when everything went to USB. I'm sure there're perks, but for me it means replacing my mouse, digitizing tablet, printer.... I miss my serial and parallel ports

And is it sad that I was thrilled to find dosbox to run my old games?

If you bought it that key is legally yours. They have utterly no right to refuse to give it to you.
      That depends.

If the copy of XP was a stand alone copy which was purchased as such, it can be moved off one computer and onto to another.

However, OEM copies are generally tied to a single machine and cannot be moved to other machines. Once that machine dies, the license dies with it. Licenses for OEM software are usually much cheaper than stand alone licenses for that reason.

I have a TRS-80 "laptop" in my closet that still works. 4 kb's of memory. 900 baud modem. Weighs like 12 lbs. You could kill a man with it and it'd still work afterwards. -.-

I use the term laptop loosely as I'm pretty sure if you had it in your lap for a while it'd start to cut off circulation to your legs.
Sounds like my vintage 1980's Brother electric typewriter. I think it's close to 20 lbs though without the case.

Of course, using that in my lap for an hour would be like having Two-Ton Rover (my big white tomcat) thinking he's a laptop for about an hour.

Are you sure? I was in Best Buy before Christmas, looking at a new washer and dryer (we were going to replace ours, now with moving -- not so much) and I took a look over to the computers. They had a number of machines with XP as the default OS instead of Vista.

But maybe that was just our store?
Probably just yours. Every machine we sell at my location comes with some iteration of Vista installed.

            Bah. Pre-built witchcraft.

I've never bought a pre-built system in my life. Hence this did not occur to me. ><

I still use obsolete gaming stuff too, too lazy to get virtual console things off the Wii.

I too, have a Tandy COCO II (TRS-80) in my closet, along with the tape deck. It still works, and was my first "computer" (I think I was 10 when I got it.)

I loved M.U.L.E. Somewhere I found a copy online that will run on my laptop. Should go find it again someday.

I had to tell this one customer (ad nauseum) who was nice, but on the not so bright side that she had to upgrade her computer for faster performance...her computer had Windows ME on it. That SC must be in serious denial that her computer is old as hell and there's no way you'd really find anything or any company that would support Windows 95!!!
