  • All or Nothing!

I have a semi-regular SC. It's always two women, but only one ever gets on my nerves. The other is merely a pawn in the real SC's life.

A quick bit of background. The restaurant I work in is located on a retail park so there's lots of stores around us. On a Saturday, it seems the only people working are us waiting/cooking staff and the retail staff in other places around the park. Everyone else seems to be off work and gravitates towards the park for their feeding/shopping needs. No problem there, it's probably our best day for business.

Now, as it's so busy (looking at about a half an hour wait on tables at the earliest sometimes) we do not allow people to come in for just drinks, because we need the tables for people having full meals, who will provide us with more money for our work. If it's quiet, then no problem.

This woman, however, really irritates me as she tells people at the door she is eating. As soon as she is seated she only has a coffee. She tells the server she will be back for food later. Unsurprisingly, she has never returned the same day to eat. I don't think she's ever eaten there.

So she's taking up space, while people who honestly want food are waiting by the door. People are annoyed with her. Now, she was seated the other day and I went over to tell her that she is sat in a very busy section and there are 3 tables in front of her. This gives people a chance to time their service a bit and decide if they can stay. Then this exchange, with the attitude that sadly cannot be coveyed through text, occurs:

SC: Can't you just serve us? We'll just have two coffees and come back for food later.
Me: I'm afraid I am not serving today and couldn't serve you ahead of people who have been seated before you. Your waitress won't be too long now. She has two tables left and then she'll be with you.
SC: *with the classic whine* But we just want coffeeeees!
Me: As you've been seated now there's very little I can do, but on a busy Saturday, we do not just serve drinks as there's a high volume of customers coming in to eat.
SC: *pouts* We're in a hurry though!

At this point I simply apologise and tell her the waitress is on the way over, realising there is no way I'm getting through to this woman. Next time I see her in the queue I'm shouting that we're not just serving drinks today and everyone has to be eating.

If she's in such a rush, why's she waited in a queue for ages AND said she's coming back later. Awful snippy woman.

I once worked in a busy espresso/breakfast cafe and this one douchebag would come in every day and sit there for 4+ hours using our wifi. He would spread his paperwork all over the counter and get a coffee and COMPLAIN about the noise when we were slammed! He stopped coming in when one final time after this complaint my manager snapped "Deal with it or get out!" hahaha

I'm so glad we don't have WiFi, I don't think I could stand it! If only I had managers that stuck to their guns!

Can you ask people before you seat them if they're coming in for a meal or only drinks, and let them know you're not seating people only for drinks?

          ^^From the OP:
"This woman, however, really irritates me as she tells people at the door she is eating. As soon as she is seated she only has a coffee."

Dunno how you could really confront her about it, though.

This is the thing....she doesn't seem to register that she can't just have a drink. It's like she hears the words but thinks, 'Well, I'm glad that doesn't apply to me.' Classic SC 'hears what they want to hear'

Sorry, I don't see how "I'm coming back later to eat" is an argument for being allowed to take up space and only get a drink now.

And if she's in such a hurry and only wants coffee, I'm sure there are plenty of places she can get one to go...?

                  Simple solution:

Minimum order amount per person, say $5-$8.

Unfortunately BookstoreEscapee there is no coffee shop. There really should be, because they'd do killer business. There's a KFC and a McDonalds, where I sometimes direct people as more appropriate places for getting their coffee.

What she does you see, is lie to whoever seats her that she's going to eat and then 'changes her mind' at the table and then we can't really ask her to leave. I wish I could always be the one to seat her, but sometimes it's someone else who isn't so familiar with her ways. Next time I see her though I'm going to tell her that she has to eat something. And ask managers to help enforce this....I can hope at least

And It's me, I wish we could enforce such a thing. Unfortunately we're a big franchise restaurant and it would be hard to do without permission from higher up.
