I saw this article! I was tempted to quote to all my customers today about it. But heehee, where do you live in SA? Now you join edible, me and Nyoibo....we have more SA peeps!

I also be from SA...and while my company still has the free single use plastic bags, im dreading B-day when the bags are removed, since our customer base is usually drunk/high or just pissed at the world...sigh the things we do to eat and keep a roof over our heads

Woah, another one, we seem to be multiplying.

I gave up working when I realised I'd earn double per fornight being on the dole and decided I'd be happier at home than taking the abuse.

Not bad, since ppl shop for crappier stuff at the $1 store.
I know. I work at one of those $1 stores! GIVE ME SOMETHING WORTH SELLING, DC! Stop sending me that orange juice, it tastes like crap.

On the plus side, we have those green reusable bags. Love them, personally.

A bit on the minus side, Wal-Mart right next door has their blue reusable bags, the same exact ones int he commercials, for only 50 cents.

On the plus side, no one seems to know it (I myself have two).

On the minus side, when you're just about broke I think I'd rather spend the 50 cents rather than the dollar.

I like the bags. I really do. I wish people would use them more often (because you can stuff a hellava lot more into them). I hate the plastic bags we have at work. Hate. Them.

I live in NSW and my store hasn't made the change yet, but will be very soon.

It's a good idea but i'm dreading dealing with the customers once it's been implemented, we have a woolworths that's already started it and the customers have come to my store which starts with a C to bitch to me about.
I am but a tiny, barren, insignificant rock caught in the glorious orbit of your shining sun. Gravekeeper.

If people are getting this mad over bags, what's going to happen in Feb when teh digital switch-over happens?

The same whining happened when Telstra killed the CDMA network. I believe telstra offered free switch over to 3G and there was still whining...

Yeah, well, it won't be that simple. Having used the "it's the law" line for both asking for IDs and for refusing to serve someone who doesn't have acceptable ID for alcohol purchases, I can tell you that something as lame as "the law" does not matter to the type of people that are going to complain about such things.
Oh, I know that. But since it is THE LAW you already that SCs stating:

"I'm calling the police." and "I'm going to get you fired." is going nowhere when you refuse to give them a free bag. And if the manager/supervisor gives you a hassle then demand it in writing while pointing out it is an order to break the law.

True, you still are not 100% safe, but personally when someone tries to talk me into doing something against the law I tend to start talking very loud stating clear for all to hear that this person wants me to break the law. So far it have worked every time.

Problem for them soon will be that no matter how much they bitch about wanting a bag, there will be none in the store, so tough cookies.

Oh, do I have a response set up for THAT.

This happened just this week. This was NOT a sucky customer, but they did make an SC comment, and I was absolutely ready for them.

THEM: "I think this round should be free."
ME: "And *I* think Anna Paquin should show up on my doorstep in a bikini. But that's not gonna happen either!"
                  THEM:
                  Then.....
                  Finally.... "Fair enough!"

"The Customer Is Always Right...But The Bartender Decides Who Is
                  Still A Customer."
