    I can't make this cute, or anything, I just...ugh.

Basically, a customer just asked me on the phone what a news story IS.

Not what it entails, not how to submit one, not whether or not she has one. Trust me, I tried to get her to make it be one of those. I went round with her like twenty times to try and get her to admit she was really asking me something else. She kept repeating it. What IS one. What is a news story.

I mumbled something to the effect of her needing to speak to the other reporter and foisted her off onto the voicemail.

I know I gave up on humanity a long time ago, but damnit. Just. Damnit.

My response would have been either,

    A: "You're kidding, right? or
    B: "A story about news."

Sad to say, I'm not at all surprised. It was only a few weeks ago we had a College student in the Library who didn't know what an editor was.

Good grief.... did she have a heavy accent and maybe English wasn't her first language? Did she sound.... slow? I'm just trying to redeem some of my faith in humanity here.

Yes, I know. That's the sort of question that makes us go looking for the hidden camera. Sad to say there ain't one.

She seemed intelligent and well-spoken but, after she made her photocopies we had to walk her, step-by-step through writing a citation so she'd know what material came from where.

We do this to avoid the students who come back the day before a paper is due and hand us a photocopy with the question, "What book did I get this from?"

Yep, that happens at least a few times a term.
