I'm just sincerely glad that it wasn't my decision to make.

At Walmart, from what I recall, WIC transactions need to be run completely separate from the rest of a customer's purchases, and done only for the group of items on each WIC check. So Persephone's example with Checks 1, 2, and 3 would be three separate transactions, with a fourth if the customer had additional items.
People can and do use all their checks at the same time, but as seperate transactions.

Check #1 is rung up. Transaction is then finished. Check #2 is then rung through. Lather, rinse, repeat. Then any other groceries are a whole other transaction.

I asked the FES about the whole thing...

      She said it is allowed.

That's a good thing to know for next time.

The scary thing is that we asked the *assistant manager* who said no. But I knew that M would know the correct answer, so I finally remembered to ask her.

What if you/your child is allergic to peanuts, is there a substitute?
A PSA, if I may, as well as another.

Kogarashi is exactly right in how our store handles things. Matter of fact, the checks are so specific as to list the type of milk. For example, some checks say whole milk, so you can't select 1% or 2%, it has to be whole. You can have only specific brands and types of ceral and specific types of cheese. Anything rung up incorrectly or with too many items (as would happen in the case of the coupon) would cause the state to reject the check and our store to absorb the whole cost of product. So you see, it's in our store's best interst to be completely anal about the checks.

Something else to consider, our lovely state also rejects checks if you can't write well and rewrite a number, even if it's obviously the same number. They'll also reject the checks if you happen to cross your number sevens (I'm not kidding, it's a habit I have and I have to be extra careful when writing numbers on the checks since I can't alter it once it's written down).

And from what I understand, there are different checks issued based on a child's dietary needs. I've seen parents receive soy-based or non-dairy formula, for example.

I know that on the majority of checks that I've seen, you can get peanut butter or a bag of beans.

I'm sure the WIC people make allowances for allergies.

On another note, I have a lady come in every few weeks with her WIC checks that let her get tuna.

Instead of formula, women who are nursing can get tuna and carrots on WIC, as well as extra units of some other WIC foods.

In MA, they enter your requirements (including allergies) and then print the checks to suit your needs. So, some people get beans instead of peanut butter, things like that.

Also, in MA, not only are you allowed to use coupons with WIC, but they highly recommend it. They also require you to buy the sale items for things like milk, peanut butter, etc. if they are on sale. And certainly, when some of the WIC cereals went on BOGO or BOGT sales, you'd see dozens of WIC checks in a row.

Not accepting coupons for WIC is pretty counterintuitive. The idjits who came up with that idea should be

I think it was honestly more of a "it's never come up before so we should err on the side of caution" thing more then anything else.

This is STUPID. The very reason I cross my 7's is so that they are clearly differentiated from my 2's. I can just imagine how pissed off I would be if I had something I needed rejected simply because I write my 7's specifically to avoid confusion with my 2's. Dumb, dumb, dumb! (The policy, that is.)
