  • State Taxes? We don't pay no stinkin' State Taxes.

Two gentlemen at check out this morning. Now, bare in mind that Texas is just like all the other states; we have a shit load of taxes. Harris County (I.E. Houston city limits) has:
    State Taxes
    City Sales Taxes
    County Taxes
    and a Sports Tax = totaling 17%
Unless you have federal paperwork proving you are tax exempt, you pay for all taxes. No matter what.

I'm sorry to say (for it's insulting to the rest of them) that these guys are Stupid Hicks.

    H1/2 = Hick 1 and Hick 2.
    Me: Smarter then you.

It started out like a regular check out this morning. I'll save you the pleasantries and questions so I can get on to the good part.

Me: <confirms name, room, prints recipt, no you don't need to sign, that's your copy to keep, blah blah blah.>
H1: When did Texas get a State Tax?
Me: <reboot brain> To my knowledge, texas has always had a state tax. (I've been here for a year and 3 months)
    H1: We've never paid state.
    H2: <shakes his head in agreement>
Me: Well, unless you have a tax exempt form, I can't not charge you taxes. Maybe you're thinking of income tax? Texas is one of the 5 states that doesn't have an income tax.
    H2: <folds receipt> That's okay, it's a company card so it's not like we're paying for it.
    *leaves*
Me: I'm not that stupid, dingus.

What, exactly, do they think sales tax is? Granted, I've never seen it listed as state tax, but we have sales/state tax so we DON'T have to pay state income tax.

      Lucky bastards... *grumblegrumble*

But then, we don't pay... I forget which tax. Property, maybe.

Benefit of being a huge tourist town. The Hotels cover that tab.

What is a "sports tax?" I never heard of that one before.

A tax to pay for publicly-funded sports stadiums and arenas, I think.

Interesting. We have to pay for stadiums here as well, but it's not a seperate tax they applies to sales.

Usually it is tacked onto hotels and rental cars, stuff that tourists who come to the game would use. And I think it only applies to King County but I am not sure. At least they did the hotel part when Seattle built Safeco Field (mariners) and Qwest Field (Seahawks)

IIRC, the tax for Miller Park in Milwaukee applies to Milwaukee County and the counties around it (Ozaukee, Washington(maybe), Waukesha, and maybe Racine and Kenosha).

It's an extra fraction of a percent added to the sales tax in those areas, I think.

Yeah, I think that's what it's for. Lame-ass tax if you ask me.

I guess that's to make up for the fact there's no income tax.

i'd been thinking of moving there but dang... 17% sales tax total? holy cow.

probably very similar to Utah's Innkeeper's tax, which is really a tax that is charged by all Innkeeper's to fund things that will draw people into town to stay at said inns... eg (did you know there is actually a difference between eg and ie... anyway, back on topic) the Sandy soccer stadium, the airport trax line, a broadway theatre if they decide to build it, the Salt Palace convention center, etc.

actually not that bad of a concept... make the people who are coming in from out of town to use said facilities pay for the facilities (because honestly, how many locals are using convention centers or transit lines to the airport).

eta- pepper elf, that is a hotel tax... completely different than sales tax... hotel taxes are ALWAYS higher than sales tax.

Now you have me curious. What's the difference between i.e. and e.g.?

                          </threadjack>

It always amazes me when people complain about taxes. Is econ no longer a required high school class in most places?

Oh, no, honey. Our sales tax is only... what... 8.5%? The rest is what the eastern states call a "Bed Tax".

Awesome. I only knew about the first 5 (of course, it was 7 years ago when I last checked). What are the new ones?
