Count me as the trained type who has ID ready when using plastic for a purchase (I don't do alcohol or tobacco). Makes life easier all the way around, and I do recognize the very good reasons a cashier might ask me for ID when using my debit card (they always seem relieved when I cheerily present my ID, usually with some light comment about being the trained type of customer
).
When working at 7-11, I discovered that I am very bad at estimating ages. On several occasions, I carded someone who turned out to be well over 30 (funny, they seemed to take it as a compliment
). About the only time I got any hassle was if the prospective purchaser WAS underage (my boss definitely had me in fear of the wrath of God, the government, and the boss on age-restricted items
), since I was in my early 20s at the time.
As far as I'm concerned, the ONLY excuse for an employee to insult a customer (even if it's as mild as "brat") would be if that customer had first hurled an insult, which the OP did not. I'd have very likely found a manager if I'd simply *witnessed* this charming little interlude, let alone been the OP.
