About Bolle, I have to say, postal has been his best (and fairly decent) film, It's surprisingly close to the game itself (albeit 2 more than 1) He een takes the piss out of himself in it, so that shows he may be wising up and may have potential, although that's probably a folorn hope.

Quoth LingualMonkey View Post, as is John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, Tobe Hooper, Guillermo del Toro, and about 90 others.
I'm in a group of alumni and current students from my alma mater who have started our own film "class". Our favorite prof invites us all to his house once a week--we pick a director and watch a bunch of his films over the course of a semester, and discuss them. We also pick a Platonic dialogue and discuss that as well--it's odd how often the themes in the dialogue are applicable to the films. This semester, we're reading Plato's Laws and, at my request, watching Capra films. I'm a total suck for Capra."Eventually, everything that you have said becomes everything you will ever say." Sam Raimi, however, is on the list
hey i like sam.in my opinion some of the best directors are the ones who learned how to make films the hard way - without much money. forces you to learn how to be extra creative with your special effects.

There's always the one fellow, whose name I forget at the moment, whose works include Babe, Happy Feet, and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. That would be an awesome paper to write. The Rich keep getting richer because they keep doing what it was that made them rich. Ditto the Poor.

Quoth LingualMonkey View PostTo clear things up...
Uwe Boll is not anywhere within 100 feet of the list. Ed Wood is also not on the list, but Tim Burton is, and so the movie Ed Wood could certainly be used.
Sam Raimi, however, is on the list, as is John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, Tobe Hooper, Guillermo del Toro, and about 90 others. I could probably supply you with the whole list, but I can't imagine anyone would care that much.

Quoth jerkface11 View PostIs Micheal Mann on the list? And on the crappy side is Micheal Bay on the list?
It's a good list. I limited myself to filmmakers who actually have something more to say than "Let's work on merchandise tie-ins" and "What about the back-end deal?"Enjoy my latest stupid quest for immortality. http://1001plus.blogspot.com/

I recently made a power point on how to answer essay questions for a test, essentially mapping out how to read and follow directions for essay prompts.
...it didn't help.
No matter how hard I try I always get a handful of students who will not/can not correctly complete the assignment.
*Shrugs* Maybe I need vocal surgery, because apparently I sound too much like Charlie Brown's teacher.

Our Film 101 class was brutal. A lot of Freshmen took it thinking it would be easy peasy. A lot of those Freshmen left the class in tears.
Our prof made us watch Zardoz for the simple fact that he could.
I also remember that we didn't get to pick the director we had to write our paper about - it was assigned (and the films available to watch in the uni's library). It is really kind of you to give the students a choice - out of 100 no less.
Are there any silent film directors on the list?

Guy Ritchie isn't on the list, mainly because he's not quite done enough. Give him a couple more films and I'll add him. There are some silent directors on the list, though--DeMille, F.W. Murnau...
I suppose just to stop the questions I should attach the entire list.
As far as the film list, nothing like Zardoz, although the temptation is strong to make people watch something like that. I've tried to include films that I think are worth watching and have either some merit or are excellent examples of what we've talked about during the week.Enjoy my latest stupid quest for immortality. http://1001plus.blogspot.com/
